Our founder Emer chatting with Ray Molony last week, talking about Circularity in Lighting and our efforts to be a sustainable manufacturer. Lovely to be recognised for our high B Corp certification points of over 100!
I was going to write out a long post, but Bridie James wrote it so eloquently, I'm going to share her thoughts. What a great day we had in Bournemouth yesterday at the first DAB.UK event on sustainable style in the built environment. Thanks to the organisers, what a great first event, thanks to Roddy Clarke for being an engaging and excellent chair and to the other great speakers, Chloe Bullock, Scott Lewis from The Bide and Summer Obaid.
The more we share, the more we inspire, the more we learn, the more we can work in a sustainable, responsible way.

Yesterday, Sustainable Style came to Bournemouth - an inspiring afternoon of discussion and networking for professionals across the Design and Build industry.
A few take-away for me from the afternoon:
MATERIALS
Explore alternative materials such as Hemp (flooring & insulation), Cork and re-using resources already created.
I’m a huge fan of Spark & Bell’s beautiful lights - many designs from post-consumer waste.
HEALTH & WELLBEING
Sustainability and wellbeing are intertwined. Materials with a lower environmental impact often release less noxious chemicals and therefore contribute to better air quality in a space.
There is more about this inside Chloe’s book Sustainable Interior Design.
SCALE
Questioning how large an additional space needs to be.
20% smaller space = 20% less embodied carbon.
This was illustrated perfectly by Scott - Designer of the beautiful Bide Cabin.
MAKING IT ACCESSIBLE
It was reassuring to hear that there is no need for sustainable ‘perfection paralysis’, and that the solution for our industry is for many professionals to create ‘small moments of impact’ within our circle of influence in order to create real change.
Thank you to my passionate and highly knowledgeable colleagues Chloe Bullock FRSA, BIID Reg ID, BA (hons) and Emer Gillespie from Interior Design Declares along with the brilliantly engaging Roddy Clarke for coming all the way to Bournemouth along with the speakers Scott Lewis from The Bide and Summer Obaid from Abstract House ® The UK’s Most Sustainable Art Gallery.
Thank you DAB UK and KTM Design team for a brilliantly organised afternoon.

We've been incredibly busy here in the SPARK & BELL workshop, in full R&D mode developing new lights and bespoke project pieces. This summer we were lucky enough to be awarded the Prosperity grant by Brighton & Hove City Council which allowed us to add this beauty to our collection; our CNC router. this has allowed us to experiment, work more efficiently and push the boundaries of what we could do in house much further. for example below she's working hard on a custom design of 400 lights for a hotel project, using 80kg of recycled plastic in the design - reduce, reuse, recycle, decarbonise ♻️
Thanks to the council for supporting our mission to save more from landfill to create beautiful lighting 🙌

On Sunday I travelled up to Decorex International for this years event, starting off with a incredibly interesting talk: Enlightened Design: Sustainable Lighting Solutions. The most interesting part was getting to sit beside fellow lighting makers Lee from The Soho Lighting Co and Matt from John Cullen Lighting and talk about our own journeys working towards circular design and building a more sustainable lighting business. Thanks to Jules Haines for chairing and spurring on some great topics.
The second talk with fellow Interior Design Declares - UK steering group members Chloe Bullock, Cat Hoad and Nicola Holden, skilfully chaired by Mirry Christie was a lovely delve into how to create an effective sustainability plan. As we all have different insights and experience, there were some super helpful suggestions on how to avoid being overwhelmed and start small. We're all on a journey and its incredibly important to support each other in a positive supportive way.

After a very busy month, I'm finally sharing the highlights from London Design Festival talk on waste as a useful and beautiful resource.
I had the pleasure of moderating a discussion with Smile Plastics, Weez + Merl, SPARK & BELL, Woven Image, and The Collective.
We delved into how waste can be transformed into a valuable resource, exchanging insights on the challenges and opportunities of scaling innovation in the circular economy. What a great energy in the room that day! I encourage everyone to check out the work of these brands.
Special thanks to Suzie Joyce for the invitation and organising at the beautiful showroom, and to the great speakers who joined me Rosalie McMillan, Louise, Merl, Alexandra Levy, Steve Lewis, and Emer Gillespie.

Our founded Emer Gillespie will be actively participating in two panel talks and green room discussions at Decorex International on Sunday. It’s exciting to see so many sessions dedicated to sustainable design practices and sourcing!
