About us

We are Stonewood Design. We are an award-winning architectural practice. We received a RIBA National Award, for our project Myrtle Cottage Garden Studio in 2015. This award celebrates architecture of the very highest level. The project demonstrates a sensitive approach to a beautiful landscape setting. We were named BD Small Project Architect of the Year 2016. In 2019 we received a RIBA National Award for Kingswood Preparatory School and Nursery as well as a RIBA South West Project Architect of the Year Award. In 2021 we won a RIBA National Award and a RIBA South West Sustainability Award for the Story of Gardening museum. Our Ethos: Enjoyment is essential Families come first Each design is a moment in time, careful not to overwork it The magic happens when we all sit around a table together Listen The stories will be whispered to you The project will tell you what it wants to be We can then craft it, with a little help from the birds and the trees Making is magnificent A space becomes a place A place is made

Past. Present. Future. Practice. Projects. People. We work by listening. We listen to the stories of the place and consider the context, the history, the craft and the materials. We’ll soon be sending out a new book chronicling our journey to date but in the meantime here’s a sneak peek. And if you still can’t hold on, hit the link to our website to see some of the projects we’ll be talking about. https://lnkd.in/dzTRRm65

This certainly was a tricky one to solve... ✔ Four new openings were required at the base of a slender 18m tall freestanding masonry chimney. ✔ The chimney had to be able to house an actual fire (no internal supports!). ✔ The chimney had to retain it's original aesthetic (no external supports either!). By breaking the problem down and solving from engineering first principles, we were able to develop an innovative post-tensioned masonry solution that ticked all of the above boxes. Well done Tom Roberts, Isaac Climpson, Graham Johnstone and the Stonewood Design team! 👏

Brickwork An in depth look at the beautifully constructed and detailed brickwork at our creamery project in Somerset. The brickwork is a combination of recycled local bricks and imperial-sized, handmade new bricks akin to that of the original building, and with similar bullnose details. The building’s landmark chimney was found to be structurally unstable, and had to be taken down brick-by-brick and rebuilt with a more stable internal structure. The engineering work involved in the reconstruction of the chimney was extremely unique owing to how rare it is for a chimney of this scale to be rebuilt in the UK. And to add more complexity, the base of the chimney has been designed to be open on all four sides. 🧱 What a beauty! 🧱 No, really - this chimney might even be one-of-a-kind. How so? This is The Creamery, part of The Newt in Somerset. We got on board to help Stonewood Design update this Victorian building, whilst retaining as many original features as possible - including its landmark brick chimney. However, this proved something of an engineering challenge - in order to make the fireplace visible from three sides, this 18m tall freestanding masonry chimney, built in the 1900s, would have needed external support. That wasn't quite in keeping with the desired aesthetic, so we got to work researching historic masonry chimneys. Our solution: to dismantle and rebuild it, brick by brick, using steel rods that are tightened, effectively sandwiching the masonry together. This looked more authentic to the original architecture, but met modern safety standards. Post-tension masonry is extremely rare in chimney design, meaning this one may even be the only one of its kind. Take a look at the finished project below 📸 👇 And keep your eyes peeled for more about The Creamery - coming soon.... 👀 #structuralengineering #structuraldesign #masonry #heritage

The Story of Emily, Cornwall The exhibition tells the story of Emily Hobhouse and the Second Anglo-Boer War (1898 -1902) in South Africa and the British concentration camps. ‘’Liberty is the equal right and heritage of every child of man, without, distinction of race, colour or sex’’ - Emily Hobhouse Emily Hobhouse, an activist and feminist, had an extraordinary impact on the events of the Second Anglo-Boer War that took place between 1898-1902 in South Africa. ‘’The War Rooms’’ exhibition, 24 carefully curated audiovisual rooms, takes guests with Emily through the courages journey she embarked on to change the lives of the women and children caught in the destruction of war. The story of Emily and her impact on the Boer War has been painstakingly researched and compiled over many years by Elasbé Brits, who, alongside Kossmanndejong and their creative partners, has created a deeply immersive, impactful and prescient exhibition.
