In 2005, we designed the first permanent exhibition for what was then known as Het Dolhuys—a building with 700 years of psychiatric history. It was a space where visitors could lose themselves, not just in the building, but in the fascinating complexity of the human mind. In 2020, we reimagined the museum’s permanent exhibition. Today, it continues to celebrate curiosity and the diversity of the human mind. Science, art, philosophy, history, and personal stories combine to make the intangible a little more tangible. Attention to all port enthusiasts! 🛳️⚓ There is an opening date for Portlantis – the new exhibition space and visitor centre for the Port of Rotterdam – which opens its doors to the public on March 22! Located at the port’s western-most point, on the artificially reclaimed sands of the Maasvlakte 2, our design of this twisting five-storey stack of spaces will give spectacular views while educating visitors about the port’s function and evolution during one of its most important transitions – the shift to sustainable, low-energy operations. “This building is not a closed box like the many distribution and data centres in the area,” says Winy Maas. “It is a twisted box of five layers, with each layer featuring a panoramic window offering a new perspective on the port area. Thanks to the rotation, each floor has terraces accessible via external staircases, allowing visitors to take a three-dimensional walk around the building. The themes of each floor reflect the past, present, and future of the Port of Rotterdam. Shooting Big VR in South Africa We’re thrilled to finally share some details about The Story of Emily, an immersive experience developed and designed by Kossmanndejong situated in Cornwall (UK) that transports visitors to the Second Anglo-Boer War (around 1900). This journey delves into the war’s impact on South Africa’s women and children, centering on Emily Hobhouse—the remarkable Englishwoman who became their advocate and voice in the darkest of times. Part of this meaningful project: a VR film titled THE CAMP, starring: Meghan Oberholzer and Cody Mountain, written and directed by award-winning South African filmmaker Nicola Hanekom, with historical guidance by Elsabe Brits, acclaimed author of Emily Hobhouse: Feminist, Pacifist, Traitor? Commissioned by The Newt, line producer: Fazila Kohl and produced by Public Agency (hey, that’s us :-) And for the tech geeks amongst us: we shot with an unprecedented 24K camera rig build by VR Techwizz John Thorborg, and finished the project in 12K, pushing hardware to its limits! Extensive set extensions, VFX, meticulous rotoscoping, and seamless stitching expertly handled by Machine Eleven: Angelo de Witt. We’re honored to have been part of bringing Emily’s legacy to life. From a playful “waiting room” to a thought-provoking “emergency room,” we challenge visitors to explore health in all its complexity. Through interactive spaces that address diagnosis, treatment, and the future of healthcare, we ask big questions: How healthy is healthy enough? Who is responsible, and who pays the price? Come in for the big ideas and stay for the surprising details—hug a teddy bear for a dose of care, throw your phone into a detox “safe,” or journal your thoughts to continue the conversation beyond the exhibition. We zijn een museum van HUH en WOW. We dagen bezoekers uit om na te denken over hun eigen geestelijke gezondheid en de dunne scheidslijn tussen gezond en ziek, normaal en anders. Wij maken mentale kwetsbaarheden bespreekbaar met kunst en cultuur   Jaarlijks ontvangen we meer dan 120.000 bezoekers, verspreid over onze vestigingen in Amsterdam en Haarlem.   Volgend jaar hebben we grootse plannen, word jij daar onderdeel van?
