Planning and Real Estate Student at The University of Manchester | Regeneration Brainery Ambassador

This time last week, I set out alongside Regeneration Brainery to Cannes for MIPIM 2025, not knowing what to expect…✈️ Reflecting on my time a week later, I’m happy to say my time in Cannes was more formative than I ever could’ve imagined. It’s not every day I sit in on talks with directors and political Leaders, especially as I’m ‘just a uni student’. But, Regeneration Brainery gives us Ambassadors the visibility to connect with these individuals in ways we wouldn’t normally have access to. I have to say, it does feel slightly odd in the early stages of my career to be surrounded by such influential people, but one thing that stood out to me this week was the positivity and excitement of industry professionals to interact with us young people, and the often valuable life advice that came alongside, which makes me even more excited to throw myself into the industry⭐️ The high point of the week for me was the affordable homes panel I sat on at The London Stand at MIPIM. I discussed the potential for community engagement in the regeneration process, to build better communities through learning from previous mistakes and how this can build trust, guiding underrepresented groups and young people into the built environment. I know it was my experience of council housing that led me to the industry, through a frustration with the disparity in development standards which is seen all too often. It was great to have my voice heard on a matter that I genuinely believe can create an industry better equipped to develop inclusive spaces🏠 Another standout moment was the FlipIt session by StudioHoodless and Layer.studio, an interactive session where we explored and challenged the barriers to regeneration through open discussion and system mapping🗺️ To anyone who struck up a conversation with myself or other ambassadors, thank you! The importance of these interactions can’t be understated. It gives us the ability to tell our stories but, more importantly, build connections and develop skills that will see us through our careers. Feeling ‘seen’ in a sea full of investors and developers is a massive confidence boost, and I know personally that each day at MIPIM I felt my confidence grow, a testament to the pink t-shirts🩷 Lastly, none of this would be possible without Regeneration Brainery and the incredible team behind it, Michele Steel and Laura Stott. When people ask me about the organisation, ‘What has it done for you?’, my answer every time is that it’s genuinely been life-changing. From coffee mornings and bootcamps in Manchester to internships and of course, MIPIM, the impacts have been life-changing! I’m forever grateful I get to be a part of such an impactful organisation and will always be its biggest advocate. Thanks again for everyone who makes this possible🙏🏽 Until next time, Cannes!🌍

  • Last week at MIPIM was a whirlwind - four days of insights, networking and bold discussions on the future of the built environment. Harry Hoodless attended a roundtable hosted by Mansell Building Solutions and Place North, discussing how #GreaterManchester can deliver homes efficiently. Ultimately, the gap between vision and delivery is still vast. #MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) holds promise but remains a gamble, as unforeseen blockers can erase efficiency gains. Urban centres need a gentle density approach that fosters community while meeting housing demand. Yet, one major missing piece in northern discussions was retrofit – with so much existing stock, why isn’t this a bigger priority? To what degree are people looking to retrofit to provide a proportion of the homes we need? Is retrofit just too hard to deliver? We'd love to not only answer, but take action on these questions. Make sure to reach out if you feel the same and want to take it further than just discussion. Vision is great, but it needs grounding in delivery. https://lnkd.in/eU5v58Aw We also hosted Flip It Regen, live, with WSP and Layer.studio, which was another reminder that the best insights are found in open debate. Big shoutout to Regeneration Brainery for their contribution to the workshop. Outside of the UK, it's clear that development and ambition are communicated differently on the world stage. Walking around the international stands in #Cannes, it's clear the UK could learn from this global perspective - are we really thinking big enough? Then, back on Friday and straight into tutorials with students at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) and practical discussions on the passivhaus standard. Congratulations to the MSA on their recent re-ranking in the top five architecture schools in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. 👏

  • Thank you to all our Hackers for an absolutely buzzing session at Flip It Regen at #MIPIM2025 yesterday! Together, we worked back from what a successful regeneration scheme looks like to glean insight of how to get to that point consistently. ✅ Start with the end and deconstruction - reclaim to start again ✅ Let the community lead as a consistent voice - vital in promoting belonging ✅ Be flexible in the design, adaptability is key And that's just from the group Harry Hoodless was with! Were you at the session? What hacks did you come up with? Comment below! Layer.studio, WSP, StudioHoodless

  • Ever heard of a regen masterplan sat on a shelf gathering dust? Of course you have. So have WSP, Layer.studio and StudioHoodless - and we want to #flip that narrative. Join us next week as we design hack our way through the blockers we all face when it comes to regen. 2:30pm Wednesday 12th March @ #MIPIM2025 https://lnkd.in/eMirnC-C is where you need to go for all the info. Faced a blocker that's really made you groan? Drop us a comment we'd love to hear it. #MIPIM #Regeneration #UrbanRegen

After a half term break, fully recovered and (sort of) caught up after UKREiiF, we now get to reflect on the first set of findings from our FLIP IT events. Some really interesting perspectives, and useful contrasting opinions to develop ideas from. The events in themselves being a rewarding experience, always learning! 🙂 check out the LEEDS video by Daniel Coetsee 👇. Thanks again Citu for the hospitality week before last 👍 Looking forward to continuing the series into summer! To those I met at UKREiiF - watch this space for future dates. #flipit #regeneration Layer.studio x StudioHoodless https://lnkd.in/evtsbvgD
