We’re pleased to announce that 26 new books are being published open access (OA) at the end of the first year of our collaborative funding pilot, Pledge to Open. Each title tackles a key global issue, from climate change to mental health. Developed to provide a new equitable OA option, the Pledge to Open initiative allows authors to maximize the reach and impact of their work with funding support from higher education institutions around the world. According to the U.N., the number of people aged 65 years or older worldwide is projected to more than double by 2050. Our rapidly aging global population brings with it a range of challenges, especially for the health care sector. We’re delighted to announce the launch of a new open access journal, Geriatric Pharmacology. As Editor-in-Chief Arduino Mangoni highlights, this is the perfect time to launch a journal focused on supporting evidence-based care of older patients. Earlier this year we were very pleased to be asked to contribute a Communications on Practice piece to Library Resources & Technical Services journal. In addition, this issue features a case study written by The Ohio State librarians about their first three-year Read & Publish pilot with Taylor & Francis, and an article written by Montana State librarians which mentions their experiences with a Taylor & Francis Read & Publish agreement. We pulled out some of the key points in these articles in order to share these important insights and sum up what was learned. Taylor & Francis partners with professional organizations to foster knowledge-sharing and dialogue, so that we can be aware of trends and factors shaping the medical communications industry. Current Medical Research & Opinion Executive Editor Mithi Ahmed-Richards says: "We've all got one common goal, which is to support each other and the industry so that we can facilitate getting research into the hands of practitioners quicker and, ultimately, enriching the lives of the patients that all of this research is for." We are excited to announce a new series of journals, the first of which will open for submissions next month: Open Advances will offer globally equitable access to participate in scientific communication, with no financial barriers to read or publish. Driven by leaders in their research community, the journals will prioritize the review and publication of research that makes a meaningful contribution to addressing the challenges facing the world. We intend to unlock the potential of Open Access to solve vital global challenges, and therefore no author will be asked to pay a fee to publish in Open Advances. The first four Open Advances journals will cover ecology, marine biology, plant science, and zoology. Learn more: http://spr.ly/6045Y0BJh #OpenResearch PeerJ

“In the last few years, Plain Language Summary of Publication articles (PLSPs) have quickly gained popularity as a publication extender that can make biomedical research more understandable, particularly in the era of open access and the open science movement, which is making biomedical research more freely available to non-traditional audiences.” Read this article from Rachel Jenkins, Johanna Todd, and Olivia Alexander, published in “Medical Writing,” which explains the importance of PLSPs, and gives best practices on the use of this important health care tool. http://spr.ly/6049YjkiP #OpenResearch #PatientEngagement European Medical Writers Association (EMWA)
