The Academy of Urbanism (AoU)
Architecture and Planning
A network of people seeking to support the people and organisations that deliver and sustain great places
About us
The Academy of Urbanism is a politically independent, not-for-profit organisation that brings together both the current and next generation of urban leaders, thinkers and practitioners. We embrace city management and policy making, academic research and teaching, development planning and design, community leadership and urban change-making, arts and cultural development, infrastructure and engineering, property law and management, politics and media. We work with places to identify and reinforce their strengths, and help them recognise and overcome obstacles to greater success. Through our events, activities and programmes we draw out and disseminate examples and lessons of good urbanism. We use the evidence we gather to promote better understanding of how the development and management of the urban realm can provide a better quality of living for all.

** NEW SPEAKERS ** What should we prioritise to tackle London’s transport problems - micromobility or mass transit? Join our next City Makers’ Forum for a lively debate on this urgent topic on Thurs 17 October. We’ve seen a huge rise in innovations in personal mobility in London. The growing popularity of micromobility - e-bikes, e-scooters and app-based cycle hire - is widely seen as key to sustainable cities. This mode of transport is more environmentally friendly than conventional vehicles and it could help to massively reduce air pollution and congestion. Yet micromobility won’t meet all of London’s growing transport needs as it's not accessible to all users. We still need investment and implementation of major public transport infrastructure to connect our city for all. So what should we prioritise for the future of London’s transport? Join the debate at Micromobility vs Mass Transit: Tackling London’s transport problems, supported by Hatch. We are trying a new format with an active debate to challenge existing perceptions and tease out the big questions on the future of public transport, with plenty of time for networking with other professionals. Confirmed debaters: ▶ Neil Walmsley, UK/Europe Regional Director, Urban Solutions, Hatch (chair) ▶ Jim Hubbard, Senior Public Policy Manager, Voi Technology ▶ Marie Feuvrier, Senior Consultant, Momentum Transport Consultancy ▶ Sam Margolis, Head of Transport Strategy & Projects, London Borough of Camden ▶ Jessica Potter, Urban Design Team Leader, Southwark Council When: Thursday 17 October 2024, 5pm to 7:30pm Where/Format: in person, London EC1 Register now by clicking the link in the comments below. #FutureOfLondon

I met Kim Power a few years back in Liverpool at an event Arup were supporting. Kim was friendly, helpful and a force of nature. She imparted some excellent advice and guidance for me, and she also does a brilliant presentation. I would expect that the below conference from The Academy of Urbanism (AoU) featuring a talk from Kim about her work in developing urban environments safer for women will be an enlightening and eye opening day.
💡 Event Invite 💡The Academy of Urbanism (AoU) is hosting a one day conference on 4th October on Quality of Life: Remaking the post-industrial city.
