Our tip for climate action communication: Respond to criticism with confidence 💡 Companies benefit from communicating about climate action, which fulfils the consumers’ needs and inspires other stakeholders to act. On the other hand, communicating sustainability measures transparently and clearly can sometimes be challenging. Our recommendations can help you build credibility. Today’s tip for communicating climate action is to address criticism with confidence. Even though you are trying your best to communicate clearly and transparently, being accused of greenwashing can still happen. We recommend taking criticism seriously from consumers, organisations, or other companies and accept it. SBTi or CSRD? Key target-setting differences that you need to know 💡 Until the introduction of the CSRD, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) was the primary body encouraging companies to set science-based targets aligned with the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. With the CSRD now in play, many companies face the challenge of aligning these two frameworks, especially those with SBTi-validated targets or those under pressure from their value chain to commit to the SBTi. Despite the initial alignment between the SBTi and CSRD in terms of ambition (reducing emissions by 42% by 2030 and 90% by 2050), there are key differences that companies preparing to set targets should consider: base year, coverage, and sector-specific guidance. Improved cookstoves in Zambia: fighting deforestation and benefiting local communities 🥘 Deforestation is a major problem in Zambia, where 2.2 million hectares of tree cover has been destroyed between 2001 and 2020. The biggest cause is the high demand for charcoal needed for cooking. Open fires or traditional cookstoves create a lot of indoor air pollution, which leads to serious illnesses among mostly women and children. To tackle this problem, the project developer The African Stove Company (TASC) distributes around 45,000 improved cookstoves to Zambian households per year. By burning biomass fuels more efficiently, these cookstoves reduce both greenhouse gas and particulate matter emissions. Less firewood required leads to less pressure on national forests while helping households save valuable amounts of time and money. This is especially the case in rural and peri-urban areas of Zambia where wood is the primary source of energy for cooking. 🌱 In addition to the environment, the cookstoves have positive social impact benefits.
