  • The fragrance industry is embracing unexpected and industrial notes such as motor oil, asphalt, copper, metal, and concrete. These unconventional aromas are gaining prominence not only in niche markets but also within high-end luxury brands. This rise in unique scents reflects a growing trend towards olfactory innovation and consumers' desire for distinctive scent experiences. Among the pioneers, Comme des Garçons, in partnership with Givaudan perfumer #AntoineMaisondieu, has introduced fragrances like Concrete, with the brand also being one of the first to introduce metallic notes, with scents like Copper by Symrise VP Alienor Massenet. In the niche sphere, Sarah Baker has been a trailblazer in merging glamorous storytelling inspired by visual arts and cinema with futuristic scent profiles created by innovative perfumers. Similarly, DS & Durga captures everything from NYC's vibrant restaurant scene to imaginative interpretations of everyday scent experiences and steamed aromas. Among the latest bold launches, Paco Rabanne's new La Collection Rabanne explores the brand's origins and Monsieur Rabanne's work with metal textures in fashion. In this collection, perfumer Fanny Bal crafted Mesh Metal, stating, “Mesh, as we all know, is an iconic material for Rabanne. It’s both fluid and metallic, which really inspired me.” This emerging approach to note marketing and fragrance creation highlights a broader industry trend where creativity, science, and technical expertise continue to redefine traditional scent boundaries.     Symrise AG Master Perfumer #MauriceRoucel, dsm-firmenich Perfumery & IngredientsFabrice Pellegrin, and Quintessence Fragrances Tristan Badard : three generations of perfumers, united by their love and expertise in tuberose For Maurice Roucel, an encounter with tuberose while exploring the Asian market and collaborating with Cochine Ltd sparked a transformative relationship with the ingredient. “I wanted to blend tuberose’s rich, heady notes with a raw, earthy element. The result in Cochine’s Tuberose Absolute & Sandalwood is exquisite!” From his upbringing in Grasse to creating Diptyque Paris’s iconic 'Do Son', Fabrice Pellegrin has continually redefined tuberose. Now, as Director of Natural Products Innovation at dsm-firmenich, he pioneers the quality of tuberose and strengthens global partnerships with key suppliers. Reflecting on his creative and technical evolution, he shares, “Earlier in my career, my goal was to modernise tuberose with fresher, floral tones. Now, I seek to tell new stories and explore its contrasts.” Tristan Badard, a leading perfumer at Quintessence Fragrances, is excited about the resurgence of white floral and opulent scents. Recognised as the recipient of the Soho House Award for Breakthrough Entrepreneur, Emmanuel Eribo’s vegan shoe brand LØCI, of which he is the founder and CEO, is disrupting the market as a forward-thinking brand. Since launching in May last year, LØCI is now distributed in 26 countries with the seal of approval by Hollywood A-listers such as Will Smith and Olivia Wilde.
