  • ♻️ On #GlobalRecyclingDay, we're reflecting on the progress being made in our approach to sustainability and how recycling and reusing play a key role in delivering a cleaner, greener railway across the North.   ℹ️ Global Recycling Day was established by the Global Recycling Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of recycling, and to promote the concept of waste as a useful resource. As part of the #TRU Sustainable Development Strategy – Our Guiding Compass – recycling is a core objective in the programme’s operations as 90% of projects across the route are now in the design and delivery phase.   Here's how TRU have been managing materials efficiently and eliminating unnecessary waste. 👇   ⭕ TRU is embracing a circular economy, maximising the use and value of materials for as long as possible by designing-out waste from the outset, planning work so they can be deconstructed and used again, and reusing waste.   🏗️ This commitment supports TRU’s approach to reducing its carbon impact. One example is the cross-project collaboration between TRU and Rail Electrification Alliance (REAL), which saw 13,000 tonnes of leftover construction material moved from two REAL sites to several TRU sites and used to build roads and construction hubs – this transfer of resources saved approximately 1,200 tonnes of carbon that would have been generated from using new materials.   🛤️ More recently, the use of composite sleepers - a TRU first - during Christmas works at Osmondthorpe Lane bridge reduced the project’s carbon usage by 71%. A composite sleeper is made from recycled plastics or other composite materials, as opposed to typical concrete sleepers which are more significant contributors of carbon.   👏 With a programme target of recycling or reusing 90% of waste generated during construction, performance is currently exceeding this objective at 96.3%, whilst TRU’s promise to divert 99% of construction waste from landfill is being met, with current performance since the start of the programme standing at 99.15%.   TRU will deliver faster, more frequent trains on a cleaner, greener railway across the Pennines - we are proud of what we’re able to showcase this Global Recycling Day, and how large programmes such as TRU have a duty to set such an example. 🌍

  • 🚢 From Ireland to Huddersfield!   🏗️Earlier this year, TRU had over 300 tonnes of concrete beams transported to Huddersfield for our strengthening work of the Span 29 viaduct. They were lifted into place with a 750-tonne crane and the entire installation was complete in under 17 hours.   🥶 The TRU team battled temperatures of -4°C to deliver a vital part of upgrade work in the Huddersfield area safely and effectively, as we took a step closer to faster, more frequent trains throughout West Yorkshire and beyond.   Take a look at how we transported and installed the concrete beams. 🎥👇

  • 🚆 PlanBEE Rail is a unique higher apprenticeship programme designed to recruit and train the next generation of project managers.   🙌 TRU's first cohort have recently completed their first six months as part of the scheme, and they will now move on to another major programme.   🚨 The second PlanBEE Rail cohort launches in September, with applications open until Sunday 23 March. • Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women driving progress across the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the wider rail industry. From engineers and project managers to planners and community engagement specialists and many more roles too. Team TRU’s women are making a huge impact, building a faster, greener, and more reliable railway for the North, offering more services, more trains and more seats. We’re committed to creating an inclusive and diverse industry where women thrive, challenge norms, and shape the future of rail.   💜 To all the inspiring women in TRU and beyond — thank you for your dedication and paving the way for future generations.   This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, calls for a more inclusive world where diversity is valued and celebrated. This reminds us of the importance of breaking down barriers, championing diversity, and ensuring our industry is a place where women feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. This celebration also aligns with Railway 200, a year-long recognition of 200 years of railway history, highlighting the people who keep Britain moving and encouraging the next generation to be part of its future. While traditionally a male-dominated sector, the railway industry is evolving and you can find out more about work opportunities at TRU here: https://lnkd.in/eyewFJYh A huge thank you to all the amazing women across TRU — your commitment and dedication inspire us all. • 🚅 The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) will deliver faster, greener, trains on a more reliable railway with more capacity, and our Ravensthorpe site is home to major projects that are key to unlocking the full benefits.   🏗️ We're constructing a new viaduct and fly-over that will allow faster trains to overtake slower ones, whilst the relocation of the station enables the number of tracks to be doubled from two to four which will secure faster journeys for customers across the Pennines.   Get the lowdown from Adam Bunce, TRU Senior Project Manager, on what's happening at one of the biggest civil-engineering sites in the country where work is well underway. 🎥👇

  • Go behind the scenes as Rail Minister Lord Hendy and Mayor Tracy Brabin visit our Ravensthorpe and Huddersfield sites. 👇🎥   🚅 Last week, TRU welcomed both of them to see first-hand the progress being made on the two major projects, both key in unlocking the full benefits of the programme.    Alongside local schoolchildren and TRU apprentices, they lowered a time-capsule marking the progress being made across TRU and the 200th anniversary year of the passenger railway being established in Britain.

  • Today we welcomed Rail Minister Lord Hendy and Mayor Tracy Brabin to Ravensthorpe and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, to see first-hand the progress being made as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.   🤝 At our Ravensthorpe site, they met with local schoolchildren and TRU apprentices to lower a time capsule, marking TRU's success so far and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the modern railway - items stored in the time capsule include a letter to the finder, a rail ticket from Manchester to York, a dated local newspaper, and schoolchildren's designs for how the railway will look 200 years from now.   🏗️ Ravensthorpe is home to one of the biggest civil-engineering sites in the country, where a new viaduct and fly-over will allow faster trains to overtake slower ones and for the relocation of the station. This enables the number of tracks to be doubled from two to four, so journeys across the Pennines have faster services and increased capacity.   🛠️ The Huddersfield station upgrade is another major project, helping achieve many of the wider benefits TRU will deliver. Work at the Grade 1 listed station is well underway as facilities are modernised, whilst protecting its historical and cultural importance.   ⚡ The majority of projects on TRU are now in design and delivery with significant upgrades beginning to come into fruition. Already, electric services are running between Manchester and Stalybridge, and some electric services are due to begin running between Church Fenton and York later this year. With new trains, more services and more seats – capacity up by one third – improved connectivity between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York will leave a lasting social and economic impact on the North.
