It's National Apprenticeship Week 🎉 🙌 Since 2019, 346 apprentices have been employed on TRU, with apprenticeships embedded in almost every facet of the programme. From engineering to sustainability, and from project management to construction, apprentices are integral to the day-to-day operations of TRU. 👉 230 of the 346 apprentices are classed as new entrants, meaning an apprenticeship with TRU is their first employed role – evidence that the programme is placing plenty of trust in early career professionals. There are also 43 upskill apprentices, who are existing employees that are taking the opportunity to upskill and further their career through an apprenticeship. 🧭 A key part of TRU’s sustainability strategy – Our Guiding Compass – is to deliver Northern jobs. By the end of the programme, the aim is to have created 4,000 new roles and safeguard another 4,000, of which 20% will be from underrepresented groups to create a diverse team that reflects the communities in which we operate in. The recruitment of all 346 apprentices has contributed to that aim, which also includes plans to ensure that 60% of the project workforce are employed from within 25 miles of the route and 80% within 40 miles.

🚂 Inspiring Young Minds🚂 We wrapped up a month of school visits in January with a trip to Carlton Primary School in Goole. Here’s our Social Value lead Katie Worrall engrossed in a lively discussion with Years 5 and 6 pupils about railway electrification. We explored electric currents and circuits, highlighting how electricity isn’t always visible. And we enjoyed answering some great questions about railway safety. These sessions are crucial for supporting children’s education and broadening their understanding of the electrification work we're completing on the railway in their local community. We’re grateful to all the schools and colleges who hosted us at recent careers fairs, interview coaching sessions, STEM and educational events. 🌿 Teamwork in Action at St Nicks Nature Reserve! 🌿 Last week, on a chilly but bright January day, our dedicated volunteers returned to one of our favourite green spaces, St Nicks in York. Our Civils Leadership Team rolled up their sleeves, trading daily duties for digging out weeds along the riverbank. This annual task helps new plants flourish in the spring. ⁉️ Do you like our new bridge? ⁉️ We helped students at St. John’s Catholic School for the Deaf build a bridge using only paper and sticky tape, experimenting to understand what makes a bridge strong and what causes it to fail. Sessions like this are great for developing teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills while introducing concepts in design, construction, and STEM subjects. 🛠️ Over Christmas and New Year, a series of major upgrades across multiple sites on the Transpennine route were carried out, taking customers one step closer to faster, greener and more reliable journeys between Manchester and York. 💯 A 100-strong team of TRU engineers worked around the clock to replace Osmondthorpe Lane railway bridge in Leeds. The new structure - weighing 200 tonnes - was moved into position in one piece by a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) vehicle, before new tracks and over 270 tonnes of ballast were laid. 🎄 Over the Christmas period, a section of Station Road railway bridge in Mirfield was replaced, allowing a new accessible station entrance to be constructed, while piling work was completed to support the new platform layout. ⚡ In Church Fenton, foundations were installed to facilitate new overhead line equipment (OLE), enabling electric trains to run through the area in the future. 🚅 The TRU team also headed to Miles Platting in Manchester, where a vital set of track points were renewed - this will enable trains to change from one line to another. 🙌 2025 is the bicentenary year of the railway, and TRU is building a railway that future generations can be proud of. 🎬 Take a look at how our work in Osmondthorpe unfolded below 👇

🏗️ A shout-out to the #TRU East team who worked over the Christmas period to successfully land the HUL4/32 rail bridge at Osmondthorpe Lane in Leeds, replacing the old structure on site. 🛤️ The new bridge will enable the track to be realigned, to allow faster and heavier trains to operate in the future. That’s a wrap 🎉 Last night, we successfully handed back the railway, ahead of schedule, after completing five days of major upgrades in Osmondthorpe, Leeds 🛠️ 🏗️ The work involved replacing an old bridge deck with a stronger one, allowing the tracks to be moved into a better position and enabling faster, larger trains to run across this section of railway in the future 🚆 A huge thank you to everyone involved - from our planning teams and site engineers, to our customer delivery managers and community relations team. This key milestone wouldn't have been achieved without you. 🙌 And of course, a big thanks to our customers who travelled through the area over Christmas - we really appreciate your patience and support.
