🌉 Steel is an essential global commodity and a critical ingredient for the energy transition. 🚨 Yet if the steel industry were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest greenhouse gas emitter. Under the IEA’s Net Zero scenario, the industry must slash 90% of emissions by 2050. Poor industry data makes it hard to track progress. 🛰️ In our latest explainer, we share how satellite imagery and hot spot detection can fill critical data gaps in steel industry emissions data. Sub-units in these facilities — blast furnaces, coke ovens, and sinters/pellet plants — operate at temperatures above 1200°C. Tracking the intensity of the hotspot above each unit over time allows us to estimate a plant’s total production and emissions. This work builds on the Global Energy Monitor Global Steel Plant Tracker, and is part of our contribution to Climate TRACE’s annual global emissions inventory, data that is already informing supply chain decisions at Boeing, General Motors and Tesla. Learn more about our work, and download a global, open-access dataset of steel asset polygons. This includes the location, shape, crude steel capacity and operation start year for 345 steel plants in 40 countries, and the location, shape, and type for 2,301 of their associated sub-assets. ➡️ Read our full explainer to learn more about our approach, its benefits and limitations → https://lnkd.in/gvF4RiPf

🛰️ As part of the Climate TRACE coalition, TransitionZero uses satellite data to estimate the emissions from steel plants all over the world, filling critical data gaps for one of today’s most polluting sectors. In this post, our Head of Heavy Industry and Commodity Data Ashank Sinha and Logan Varsano demonstrate our approach to modelling, using the world’s second largest steel plant, POSCO Gwangyang in South Korea, as a practical example. Read the full article → https://lnkd.in/guEfyi5a
Steel manufacturing caused 2.27 BT of CO2e in 2022. The most polluting steel manufacturing plant in the world is the POSCO Gwangyang steel plant in South Korea — the second largest steel plant on Earth. Learn how our colleagues at TransitionZero calculate emissions from steel manufacturing by zooming in on this super emitter. https://lnkd.in/guEfyi5a #SteelManufacturing #Emissions

Love this Work on Climate interview with our Head of Product Sabah Zdanowska about her transition into climate tech. She shares the challenges of building a no-code interface for complex energy systems modelling, and what it's like guiding a company pivoting into software and data products. There's also some great advice on how to land a coveted role in product!

🤝 We were honoured to host senior leaders from the Thailand Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) this week. Our CEO Matt Gray, Southeast Asia Lead Isabella Suarez, and Head of Analysis Abhishek Shivakumar met with ERC representatives to discuss Thailand’s energy transition. We discussed Thailand’s priorities in ensuring energy security and affordability whilst modernising the market to attract more renewable energy and investment, and how TransitionZero can support modeling for policy development and rationalisation. Thank you to our distinguished guests for an insightful conversation: Dr. Sudharma Yoonaidharma, Commissioner; Dr. Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, Secretary-General; Dr. Phuwanart Choonhapran, Assistant Secretary-General; and Ms. Praewpanit Condee, Division Chief, Electricity Provision Regulation and System Monitoring.

Stable long-term finance from Power Purchase Agreements has shaped the development of Southeast Asia’s power systems over the last 30 years… But are they still fit for purpose in the energy transition era? In our latest blog, TransitionZero’s Consultant Analyst Melissa Brown shares her insights on: 🔌 How the rigid terms of fossil-fuel Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have limited system flexibility, and why this isn’t a good fit for the more dynamic market structures Southeast Asia needs to integrate new renewable capacity 🔒 How policymakers in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are grappling with complex energy transition choices due to over-reliance on PPAs and coal lock-in ⁉️ How analysts lack the data needed to understand how power systems operate because confidential PPA terms are not disclosed 🔍 How more transparency around PPAs would help energy planners assess whether legacy assets are cost-effective and how policies should be shaped to support renewables integration Explore all this and more in the full article ➝ https://lnkd.in/e4k5j6s8 This is part three in a series on Southeast Asia’s ETM deals.

The evidence is piling up: ammonia co-firing simply does not make economic sense and is not aligned with net-zero goals. Great to see this new analysis by Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션).
Costs for #ammonia co-firing piling up to add financial burden on the #SouthKorea and other countries in the region facing the same challenges. Recent analysis by Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션) reveals that implementing ammonia co-firing at South Korea’s Taean 9 and 10 #coal plants will cost up to 1.7 times higher than the total cost of retiring the entire #coal fleet in Chungnam Province, which hosts the largest concentration of coal plants in the country. Congratulations to Laura Clarke OBE and all our partners at ClientEarth on their wins this year! ⚡️Our partnership in Southeast Asia leverages Client Earth’s policy and regulatory expertise and TransitionZero’s data and energy systems modelling capability, supporting the development of just, and bankable, energy transition plans in the region.
As I head off for my summer break (a road trip in the States…), I thought I’d share our ClientEarth Summer Report. It’s a wonderful overview of the impact we have had, and the progress we have made, in the first half of this year. Highlights include: - Our advocacy on the EU’s Nature Restoration Law with the #RestoreNature Coalition; - Our success, with Portuguese NGOs, in blocking the Montijo airport in Portugal that would have been devastating for migratory birds; - Tackling bottom trawling in marine protected areas in France, with NGO Bloom; - Challenging INEOS plastic plans (again) - Winning our challenge to the UK Government’s climate strategy (again) – alongside Good Law Project and Friends of the Earth; - Supporting a victory in the first ever aviation greenwashing case against KLM – with Fossielvrij NL and Fossilfree advertising; - Opening our new office in Japan; - Launching a new partnership with TransitionZero in Southeast Asia; - Holding carbon majors accountable for ‘zombie oil wells’ in Colorado; - And much more besides… None of this work would be possible were it not for our fantastic partners and collaborators around the world; our brilliant, committed, creative colleagues at ClientEarth and, of course, our wonderful donors, friends and supporters. So thank you. Thank you for all you do to help us help our Client, The Earth. She is everything to us. And here’s to a happy August, wherever you are.
