UK Architects Declare

Architecture and Planning

A declaration on climate and biodiversity emergency by UK architects.

About us

The twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats. For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission and design buildings, cities and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system. The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. Recognising this, we are committing to strengthen our working practices to create architecture and urbanism that has a more positive impact on the world around us.

The Better Business Act is pushing for a simple but powerful change to UK law – ensuring that all directors align social and environmental interests with shareholder returns in their decision making. From 300 to nearly 3,000 members in just three years – the growth of the Better Business Act coalition is proof that businesses want to see a legal shift to embed stakeholder governance in UK company law, ensuring businesses are truly part of the solution to the UK’s biggest challenges. But we need more voices. More businesses. More action. With key policymaker engagements ahead, now is the moment for businesses to step up and get behind a change that will level the playing field for all businesses. The bigger the coalition, the louder our voice in government – and the greater the impact we will make. Companies like Iceland Foods, Virgin, Lucky Saint | B Corp™, and Ben & Jerry's are already on board – will you join them? 📢 Sign up today and be part of the movement driving real, systemic change. • AD's talented Student Ambassadors recently attended the BEF: Built Environment for the Future session to talk to networks of young professionals about the importance of the #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex with regard to supporting a paradigm shift towards regenerative architecture across the built environment sector. "CIBSE’s YEN group were looking for ideas on how to provide a platform for new thinking and information exchange. Amy and Anushka, Architect’s Declare student ambassadors, were able to show how AD has already begun to create just that. The Regenerative architecture Index was set up in partnership with Architecture Today to showcase those practices who championed three key regenerative principles: Become a good ancestor, Create a just space for people, and Co-evolve with nature." Enter the #RAI now and showcase the work your practice is doing to move towards regenerative practice! https://lnkd.in/dv2jKAJj

Last month, we hosted a very special event for our 10th session, bringing together other young professional networks from across the built environment. BEF is all about fostering collaboration, and collective action towards a better future - and so our event focused on creating connections between groups. Thank you to Allies and Morrison for hosting us in their wonderful studio. We would like to extend a massive thank you to UK Architects Declare's Student ambassadors, The Academy of Urbanism (AoU)'s Young urbanists, CIBSE YEN London, CPA's nextgen, ICE Early Careers Network (ECN) London, IStructE London YMG, RICS Matrics UK, London & South East and Royal Town Planning Institute Young Planners. Please have a read through our summary, we hope to spotlight some of the amazing people within these groups who brought fantastic energy and insights. And lastly, look out for our next event shortly coming late spring 2025!

At long last, we are pleased to share our report from the 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 that we convened on 27th November 2024! 👇 We gathered a group of about 50 people representing central and local government policymakers, civil servants, professional bodies and cross-industry experts, including leading property developers, financiers, heritage experts, architects, engineers, planners, and volunteers to discuss this important issue and potential solutions. The discussion, captured in the report below👇, centred around ideas and proposals to achieve the introduction of policy clarity, sensible regulation and financial incentives around retrofit for the real estate and construction industry. As the meeting was held under the Chatham House Rule, the report contains some high-level notes about the general discussion, without attributing any comments, as well as some specific ideas that came out of it. The Report also includes by permission the list of attendees, as well as photos from the event and copies of the discussion slides. Thank you to the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 for hosting the roundtable at the IoD headquarters on Pall Mall. We are planning a follow-up to this roundtable – a '𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽' (working title) – in the near future to continue this push, so watch this space! Please contact us (https://lnkd.in/eEkZC2am) if you have any questions or would like to get more involved with DWB. You can also DM one of our co-founders, Richard Nelson, Leanne Tritton or Will Hurst, with any comments or questions.

  • One of the great values of the #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex, which we're proud to have created with Architecture Today & launched last year, is the profile it gives architectural practices & other built environment designers among potential clients who are looking to make the positive difference the planetary emergency demands. The RAI gathers detailed and wide-ranging information from participants, demonstrating their track record and commitment to regenerative design. So it's wonderful to see the initiative shown by The The Wildheart Trust and its COO Lawrence Bates in exclusively specifying the RAI's 2025 entrants for expressions of interest in designing their exciting new development - The International School of Rewilding and Regenerative Agriculture. To be located on a 70-hectare site connected to the existing Wildheart Animal Sanctuary at Sandown on the Isle of Wight, this world-first will act as a global centre for practical and academic research and innovation in environmental sciences and engineering. The competition - open exclusively to participants in this year's RAI - will set out to identify an architect to work with Wildheart and ISoRaRA stakeholders and funders to develop initial design proposals but also to commit to a long-term partnership to monitor the project’s performance and the on-going relationship between wildlife, people, ecology and landscape and to develop and evolve the campus as required. More detail in this story from Architecture Today: Call for expressions of interest: The International School of Rewilding and Regenerative Agriculture https://lnkd.in/ewsptPH3 That story also has the link to the Regenerative Architecture Index and information on last year's participants: the deadline for this year's RAI entries is 16th May - with EoIs for the International School due soon after, by 23rd May.

At a time when fear-driven politics seems to be the new normal, it’s reassuring to step back and reflect on the collective progress we have made as professionals. The built environment sector and UK Architects Declare have campaigned relentlessly to drive positive action toward a hopeful future. (#BuildingBlocks manifesto) Having attended #FutureBuild last week, I’m buzzing with ideas on how the construction industry can support a positive transition in the UK. My top three takeaways: 1️⃣ Engaging with the new Circular Economy Task Force to ensure the built environment becomes a core part of the government's strategy for the Circular Economy over the next decade. Architects Declare will soon launch a campaign to gather signatories' feedback on policies and approaches to kick-start this transition—watch this space! 🚀 Huge thanks to Dr David Greenfield and Libby Peake from the #CircularEconomyTaskForce for speaking with myself, Julia Barfield, and Laura Baron from UK Architects Declare, we look forward to continuing the conversation. 2️⃣ Seizing the opportunity posed by the delivery of 1.5 million homes—by prioritising the reuse of existing buildings and promoting regenerative urban neighbourhoods that are low-carbon, nature-positive, and healthy. 💡 Check out the #DontWasteBuildings campaign—great insights from Will Hurst and Duncan Baker-Brown at FutureBuild! 🎤 Also fascinating to hear Yolande Barnes discuss real estate’s role in tackling the polycrisis by intensifying and enhancing quality of life in existing places. 3️⃣ Showcasing our success stories in regenerative design by participating in the Regenerative Architect Index (RAI), a collaboration between Architecture Today and UK Architects Declare. 🙌 A big thank you to everyone who stopped by the #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex stand at FutureBuild. If you haven’t yet, sign up to be part of the movement—link here! https://lnkd.in/eakNrfhK Let’s keep the momentum going. What are your thoughts on these initiatives?💬

CALLING ALL ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS: The Wildheart Trust is on a mission to create the world’s first International School of Rewilding and Regenerative Agriculture (ISoRaRA)! We need visionary architects to help bring it to life. Located in the heart of the Isle of Wight Biosphere, this groundbreaking initiative will serve as a global hub for environmental innovation, research, and education. Think: - Rewilding landscapes — the first UK site rewilded by European Elk - Regenerative architecture — low-impact structures that work with nature - A living laboratory — testing cutting-edge regenerative practices Working with Wildheart, we’re launching a limited design competition to find an architecture practice that shares a commitment to regenerative placemaking and ecological innovation. But there’s a twist: Only practices participating in the 2025 Regenerative Architecture Index (RAI) — a partnership between Architecture Today and UK Architects Declare — will be considered for the shortlist. This is your chance to create a campus that redefines the relationship between people, wildlife, and the land. Are you up for the challenge? Expressions of interest deadline: 23rd May 2025 Enter via the Regenerative Architecture Index to be considered.
