We're delighted to be a key partner in a new initiative to help strengthen science, technology and innovation in West Africa. Sankore was launched in Abuja this week by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Nigeria’s Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology (FMIST), and Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science & Technology (MEST). It will be delivered by UNESCO and Results for Development (R4D) collaborating with local and international partners to ensure effective implementation and knowledge transfer. UKCEH’s West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana, will lead the development of a Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) helpdesk for West Africa. Head of UKCEH’s West Africa Office, Adelaide Asante: “With a leading role in the commercialisation activities and the establishment of an ST&I helpdesk, we look forward to contributing to the programme, which will unlock new opportunities for start-ups, researchers and investors in the region.” UK in Nigeria Harry Dixon
In Abuja today, we officially launched Sankore, a £1.9m initiative to boost science, tech, and innovation in West Africa. Focusing on Nigeria and Ghana, Sankore will drive progress in research, innovation, and sectors like agriculture and energy, supporting the operationalisation of national research funds and councils, improving policy and data transparency, and providing expert guidance. The project, aimed at driving economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development in the region will be delivered by UNESCO and Results for Development . #GoFarGoTogether #UKinGhana

🎙️NEW! Resistance Rising: 1.14 million. In the latest episode of our Counting the Earth podcast we're uncovering the science behind antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 🦠 AMR is a growing global challenge. It occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites become resistant to the medicines that are meant to kill or treat them. In this episode Alice Hope and Sue Nelson, Boffin Media visit the River Kennet and Thames Water’s Reading Sewage Treatment Works to learn more. AMR is driven in part by microorganisms from our waste, along with chemicals from our homes (like medications, cleaning products and antifungal shampoos), entering our watercourses, along with agricultural and urban runoff. 🎤 Alice and Sue meet UKCEH molecular microbiologists Dr Holly Tipper and Dr Isobel Stanton to discuss current research on AMR, the knowledge gaps, and the role of the environment in the development of AMR in microbes. 👷🏼♀️ 💩 And they don their hard hats and hi-vis gear to follow the wastewater journey through the treatment works, with Dan Freeman, chemical investigations lead at Thames Water, providing insight into the monitoring of emerging contaminants. This episode's headline number—1.14 million—is the number of deaths attributed to antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections in 2021 (UNEP). 🎧 Listen now: https://lnkd.in/e3EtgCsy Search for Counting the Earth on your favourite podcast app! #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #SciencePodcast #WaterQuality Daniel Read Gill Ormrod NERC: Natural Environment Research Council UK Research and Innovation Digital Health Hub for Antimicrobial Resistance
