We love that a fly facility technician has featured in UK Research and Innovation's #101jobs campaign which profiles jobs that change the world! 🌍 After studying Biology and a masters in Tropical Disease, Hannah Shaw became interested in the technician role at The Francis Crick Institute. 💬 Research isn't the only pathway, I am more of a lab person. It lets me apply my knowledge of science and things I like to do, in my individual way. Every time we make something new, it opens a whole new world for research and hopefully more cures, and I'm proud of that." says Emma Watch the video below 👇
We often meet inspiring people making unique contributions to research, but their roles don’t always get the recognition they deserve. In our brand-new 101 Jobs season 3, our very own Zoe meets the people whose jobs are changing the world and finds out what’s really involved. In this episode, Hannah Shaw, a fly facility technician, gave us the most amazing behind-the-scenes look into her work at The Francis Crick Institute, where she looks after thousands of fruit flies. All to help answer the biggest questions about human health. This clip here is just a glimpse into Hannah’s incredible job. Why are fruit flies so important? How did she know she wanted to work with them? And what is it like to switch gears from an academic path to applying science in a different way? Congratulations to Midlands Innovation for celebrating #10YearsofImpact This regional research partnership has championed the role of technicians for years. The eight universities were Technician Commitment signatories from the start, and they helped secure Research England funding for MI TALENT - a five year programme which has changed the landscape for technicians and led to our creation.
🎉 2025 marks 10 incredible years since our partnership began! Throughout this year, we will be reflecting on some of our key milestones and looking ahead to the next 10 years through our #10YearsofImpact and #Vision2035 features. Take a look at our anniversary web page and video to see some of those key milestones and get a glimpse of what is to come. https://lnkd.in/e68adTqt #10YearsOfImpact #MidlandsInnovationis10 University of Leicester University of Nottingham Keele University University of Warwick Cranfield University University of Birmingham Loughborough University Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy C-DICE Midlands Mindforge Creative Triangle Limited HyDEX

"We need Strategic Technical Leaders... and the vital work they do must be represented in university leadership." New blog on Wonkhe from Catrin Harris, Research Fellow, TALENT and Hannah Noke, Co-Lead for the UK ITSS Research and Policy Group https://lnkd.in/e-vQKQ3v 📚 Download Strategic Technical Leadership: Advocacy, Empowerment and Transformation report, funded by Research England https://lnkd.in/eZ6Z3pX7
New on Wonkhe: Technicians and the vital work they do must be represented in university leadership, argue Catrin Harris and Hannah Noke https://lnkd.in/e-vQKQ3v "Historically there has been a leadership gap for technicians in higher education institutions, with their roles often being capped at lower levels, meaning a lack of representation in strategic decision-making."
