Thank you to Marie Jennings, who is running the London Landmarks Half Marathon Limitedin memory of her sister, Clare. Clare was a beloved older sister and Nursing Team Manager who tragically passed from #sepsis just a few days short of her 59th birthday. Marie says: “She was my older sister. My best friend. My confidant. My rock. She made whatever ward she worked on feel like a family. Everyone regardless of grade or level was equal in Clare’s eyes as they should be. Everyone mattered to Clare. She saved so many lives. She suddenly felt ill on Friday 6th August 2021. By Tuesday evening it had all changed and I received a call to say things had changed dramatically and to get to the hospital as signs were showing she was fading. I arrived just in time to hold her hand, to say I love you, and to say goodbye.” Clare also mischievously ran away from school as a teenager, travelling from Dagenham to Downing Street – where Marie’s race will also finish on the 6th April. We’re so grateful for Marie’s efforts in memory of her sister 🧡 Learn more about how to fundraise for us: https://lnkd.in/ebg-Kfwd
The UK Sepsis Trust
Hospitals and Health Care
The UK's leading sepsis charity, raising awareness of the condition and providing vital support to people affected.
About us
Many people have never heard of sepsis, or if they have, people are often confused about what it is, and what signs to look out for. However, sepsis kills 48,000 people in the UK every year, which is more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer deaths combined. If it isn’t treated immediately as a medical emergency, it can take someone’s life in under 24 hours. Sepsis is the body’s over-reaction to an infection or injury, which causes the immune system to attack its own organs and tissues. It affects 245,000 people every year in the UK and is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide (11 million people). If not caught quickly enough, sepsis can result in organ failure, amputation and death. However, with early diagnosis it can be treated with intravenous antibiotics and fluids, and the outlook is often good for the majority of patients who seek urgent medical attention. Sepsis is triggered by any infection or injury (no matter how minor either may seem), and can affect anyone, regardless of existing health conditions. Some of the most common causes of sepsis in both adults and children are from urinary tract infections, infected cuts or bites, a wound from trauma or recent surgery and chest infections. The UK Sepsis Trust was founded in 2012 by NHS consultant, Dr Ron Daniels BEM. We work tirelessly to raise awareness of the life-threatening condition, instigate political change for better outcomes for sepsis patients, educate healthcare professionals, and provide vital support to people who have been affected by sepsis. The Trust offer a free, confidential listening service facilitated by our team of specialist sepsis support nurses, as well as support groups specific to our service user’s circumstances. The UK Sepsis Trust registered charity number (England & Wales) 1158843 (Scotland) SC050277.

Released for #WorldCancerDay, our first podcast episode of 2025 explores a critical link that cancer patients need to be aware of between infection, neutropenia, and sepsis. Dr Ron Daniels is joined by Rachel Yarham from Blood Cancer UK to discuss: - Why cancer patients are at a higher risk of infection and sepsis - How neutropenia affects the immune system - The fantastic free resources Blood Cancer UK have created to support patients in recognising infection and hopefully avoiding sepsis - How our two charities are working together to spread life-saving information Sepsis can escalate fast – but knowledge saves lives. 🎙️If you or a loved one are affected by cancer, this episode is essential listening: Plus, check out Blood Cancer UK’s new information hub, endorsed by UKST: https://lnkd.in/e2eJQyg3

We’d love to give a shoutout to Hayley Scowen-Bage and the rest of ‘Operation Liftoff’ for their high flying fundraising for UKST! Hayley and five other RAF cabin crew attempted to lift the weight of a Voyager Airbus 330 Aircraft – 121 tonnes! – within 12 hours, actually completing it in an amazing 3.5 hours. The team were raising money in memory of James Philliskirk, who tragically died of #sepsis in 2022 aged only 16 months. They’ve raised a sky-high £350 – thank you! Sepsis can strike fast – and it without urgent treatment, it can be fatal. One family who knows that all too well is Holly and Dickon, who lost their daughter Nova to sepsis when she was just 11 months old. Now, Holly is raising awareness to help other parents recognise the signs sooner. Sepsis can affect anyone, but recognising the symptoms early could save a life. Learn more and read Nova’s story here: https://lnkd.in/eVmCw4NQ Don’t forget, if you’ve been affected by sepsis loss you can access compassionate nurse-led support through our website.
