A productive and well-attended meeting of the Strategic Advisory Board for the GW-SHIFT Place-Based Impact Acceleration Account took place at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd on Wednesday, 22 January 2025. Board members received updates on programme developments, sparking stimulating and important roundtable discussions—both in person and online—about future plans and opportunities. A special thanks to Steph Jary (Western Gateway) for expertly chairing the meeting, Karen Brooks (GW-SHIFT Deputy Director, University of Bath) for reporting on programme activities and future plans, and Nick Cook (EPSRC Project Officer) for opening the session. 🚀 Next-Generation Hydrogen Storage: Paving the Way for Energy Transition At the Hydrogen South West - Accelerate the change Quarterly Meeting, Dr. Mi Tian, Associate Professor at the University of Exeter, showcased groundbreaking research on solid-state hydrogen storage, highlighting its role in overcoming critical energy challenges. Held at National Composites Centre with great introduction from Jo Dally. 🔑 Why Solid-State Hydrogen Storage? Traditional hydrogen storage systems—high-pressure tanks (700 bar) and liquid hydrogen (-253°C)—are energy-intensive and costly. Dr. Tian’s research focuses on solid-state storage systems that offer: ✅ High Capacity for hydrogen storage. ✅ Operation at Near-Room Temperature, reducing energy requirements. ✅ Safe, Scalable, and Affordable solutions through advanced materials like MOF-polymer composites. 🛠 Key Research Themes: 1️⃣ Mechanochemical Synthesis (MOFs, metal hydrides). 2️⃣ Advanced Characterisation (in-situ neutron scattering, diffraction). 3️⃣ Next-Generation Solid-State Systems: Engineering practical solutions. 4️⃣ Scalable Manufacturing for real-world adoption. 🌍 Impact: These innovations enable hydrogen to become a safe, efficient, and scalable energy carrier—critical for decarbonizing transport, enabling renewable energy storage, and achieving net-zero goals. 🎉 Diversity: Being the Change Today’s meeting also saw the launch of Hydrogen South West’s report, “Diversity: Being the Change”, spotlighting the role of women in the hydrogen sector.
