Yesterday we were delighted to show our appreciation to 25 Classroom Assistants from across the Derry and Strabane District Council area as part of our Neurodiversity Week celebrations! At the celebratory event, Certificates of Recognition for those nominated by School Principals were presented for their outstanding contribution in the role of Classroom Assistant, supporting children and young people, and celebrating neurodiversity in their school. The event follows on from research by the School of Education highlighting the significant knowledge and practice gap in relation to this pivotal workforce supporting our children with special educational needs. #WeAreUU | #ProudofUU | Clionagh Boyle | Malachy Ó Néill | Claire Woods

We are leading on a €9.6 million project that will help to create sustainable adaptation to the threats posed by climate change. The Irish coast is facing a combined climate and biodiversity crisis with species loss, impacts from rising sea levels and increased storm activity causing erosion challenges and reducing resilience of our coasts. Through the Coastal Monitoring and Adaptation Planning (CMAP) project we will help interweave local action and citizen science at a range of 15 coastal sites on the island of Ireland to tackle the effects of climate change. Ahead of #WorldDownSyndromeDay2025, we’ve launched a five-year research project to examine the health, wellbeing and development of people with Down Syndrome. Launching at our Derry~Londonderry campus today, we were pleased to be joined by the inspiring Dr James Martin, an Ulster University honorary graduate who made history in 2023 as the first person with Down Syndrome to win an Oscar, as he becomes our patron for this project. My Life with Down Syndrome kicks off with a survey designed to capture the views of people with the condition, their families and carers, about the issues that impact their life. The research is funded by the Department of Health NI and the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund, with support from the Down's Syndrome Association, Foyle Down Syndrome trust and Children's Heartbeat Trust. Do you see life through rose-tinted glasses? Although coloured lenses are often prescribed for patients with 'visual stress', there is little known research surrounding the benefits of coloured lenses in reducing symptoms. Darragh Harkin's thesis aims to explore the efficacy of coloured lenses in adults with visual stress through the largest investigation of coloured lens performance on readers to date.
