🌍 Exciting news today! We've secured over £70 million to establish new world-leading and open-access research facilities and programmes that will decarbonise future transport. This funding is secured based on a £14 million award from Research England's UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), and augmented by public and private co-investment. It allows us to build on our internationally leading capabilities in #electrification, #hydrogen and #manufacturing. “Today’s investment accelerates our shared vision to create world-class facilities, build strategic partnerships with industry, stimulate investments in the UK, and drive economic growth. We’re grateful to UKRPIF and our industry partners for the trust they have put in us." - Chris Gerada, Professor of Electrical Machines and lead for strategic research and innovation initiatives. It was a pleasure to represent the university at Labour Party Conference. Our Professor Henner Wapenhans shed light on the power of #manufacturing and #innovation to deliver economic growth at a Make UK panel with: ⭐ Make UK Chief Executive Stephen Phipson CBE ⭐ The Guardian Special Correspondent Heather Stewart ⭐ Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire ⭐ Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP ⭐ Trades Union Congress (The TUC) General Secretary Paul Nowak #Lab24 #WeAreUoN Arden Strategies Jane Norman Omnifactory®
One of the highlights of our presence at Labour Party Conference has been the opportunity to showcase cutting-edge research and innovation that has the potential to change lives, society and the environment around us. The Brain and Physiological Data Group from the University of Nottingham School of Computer Science was invited to exhibit its brain scanning technology at the The Royal Society and New Statesman reception as part of the #Science2040 programme. Associate Professor Max L. Wilson and PhD student Jwan Shaban demonstrated the personal brain scanners to policymakers, exploring the potential benefits and ethical questions around consumer neurotechnology. They exhibit again next week with the The Royal Society and The Spectator at the Conservative Party Conference 2024 in Birmingham. As part of a Make UK panel on the role of manufacturing in delivering economic growth, chaired by the The Guardian's Heather Stewart, Professor Henner Wapenhans from UoN Zero Carbon Cluster spoke alongside the Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP, Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire and the Trades Union Congress (The TUC) General Secretary Paul Nowak. He discussed the University’s leading strengths in advanced manufacturing and the technologies needed to decarbonise heavy transport – and how this has the potential to drive economic growth in the Midlands and beyond. ⚡️ The atmosphere is electric at #CENEXExpo! We heard from Minister Lilian Greenwood and Sarah Sharples on the UK Government's plans to accelerate transport #electrification in the face of vast, complex challenges. And we saw hunger in the industry for solutions to: 🚀 Decarbonise heavy duty transport 🌱 Nurture start-ups and innovators 💧 Harness #hydrogen propulsion Exciting to see the buzz at Nottingham’s stand for our own world class, industry-ready testing, R&D, and manufacturing services. We're bringing these services to benefit of ambitious transport business, in turn helping UK govt. make communities prosper. Join us? Meet the researchers driving food policy research at our new Centre for Food Policy and Foresight! Over 50 academics at the University of Nottingham addressing food system challenges have come together to transform our food systems with our Centre Director, Paul Wilson. The Centre Associates will work with researchers and institutions in the UK and globally, building on existing research and policy partnerships to improve our efforts to attain a food system that works for people and the planet. 🚜 Dr Anne Touboulic, Associate Professor in Operations Management works to make food supply chains more sustainable and ethical. 🏘 Professor Sally Hibbert delivers research that addresses food health inequalities and community food security 📝 Drs Richard Hyde and Simon Welham promote nutrition and health policies and regulations among key stakeholders, both nationally and at local levels. 🥩 Professors John Brameld Pru Hobson-West, and Dr Asma Ahmed are looking at alternative protein solutions, making sure that new food innovations are sustainable and acceptable to consumers. 🌱 Drs Nick Girkin, Hannah Cooper and Lorna Kiamba conduct a wide range of research into food production systems to reduce environmental impacts and increase the resilience of our food systems. ⭐ Excited to see BBC News coverage of our new partnership with GKN Aerospace. ✈ The BBC quotes Professor Chris Gerada: "The vision of net-zero air travel is within our sights... To get there, we must push the limits of what is technically possible." 🤝 The £44m H2FlyGHT project sees GKN Aerospace lead with partners Parker Meggitt, University of Nottingham and The University of Manchester, supported by the UK Government through the Aerospace Technology Institute programme. It was announced at Farnborough Airshow with Department for Business and Trade. 👩🔧 As part of the project we kicked-off a £5.3 million programme of research to support the development, manufacture and test of a revolutionary cryogenic hydrogen-electric propulsion system. 🥇 It'll be one of the first to use our new hydrogen propulsion systems facility, made possible by the £70 million from Research England and industry co-investment - so that we can build open-access research facilities and programmes to achieve #transportdecarbonisation. 🏡 The facility builds on our manufacturing capabilities, including at our new Zero Carbon Innovation Centre funded by East Midlands Freeport.
