Updates

  • The C2V team, working on behalf of United Utilities, has recently installed a new pipeline at the Chapel-en-le-Frith Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), the new pipeline has replaced and upgraded the existing incoming sewer pipe and increased the flow into the WwTW. Originally, when delivered from the manufacturers the new pipe was red, after listening to concerns of local residents the pipe was later painted black so that it was more fitting with its surroundings. The team also dismantled and removed the old pipe and planted trees in the area. We look forward to sharing future updates on this work and the wider projects we’re undertaking with United Utilities right across the North West which will be part of the largest upgrade of the infrastructure for a century.

For our final feature in Women in Construction week, we’re hearing from Christina Musa. Christina joined VolkerStevin as a placement student working on our HMNB Portsmouth QEC Base Porting Infrastructure project, after a rewarding experience she was thrilled to be offered a graduate position upon completion of her civil engineering degree. Since then, Christina has built a successful career working on some of our amazing projects, including HS2; ground investigation at the Isle of Wight and currently our Leigh expansion and Hildenborough embankment scheme. Christina has shared with us why she chose a career in construction, and what she enjoys most about working in the industry. #wicweek #wicweek25 #womeninconstructionweek2025

  • The Teston Sluice Gates Refurbishment project recently welcomed MidKent College student Phoebe Mannering to site, as a part of her work placement, offering a first-hand look at a career in civil engineering. Phoebe had the opportunity to shadow our very own Chartered Engineer, Hine Jones, gaining invaluable insight into the role and responsibilities of a Section Engineer working on a critical infrastructure project. At VolkerStevin, we are committed to fostering the next generation of construction professionals and encouraging women to pursue careers in engineering. By providing real-world experiences on active sites, we are able to break down barriers and showcase the diverse opportunities available in the industry. Hine Jones, an advocate for women in engineering, shared her journey with Phoebe and provided guidance on key aspects of site management, problem solving, and technical design. Witnessing firsthand the complexities involved in the Teston project gave Phoebe a deeper understanding of the skills required in civil engineering. We are proud to support aspiring engineers like Phoebe and help encourage more women to consider careers in construction. Opportunities like this help shape the future of the industry, ensuring a more diverse and skilled workforce for years to come. #wicweek #wicweek25 #womeninconstructionweek2025

Another milestone has been reached as progress continues apace on Sunderland’s newest landmark. Our team working on the New Wear Footbridge has laid the last of 91 deck planks, which will form the “floor” of the stunning new river crossing.    The 10-metre wide planks have been installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system, designed specifically for this project, with each plank lifted by crane from the southern riverside park onto the deck trolley, which then transports and positions them with precision before returning for the next one. Once in place, each plank is “stitched” to its neighbour using in-situ concrete to create a seamless deck. Cllr Kevin Johnston, Portfolio Holder for Business, Housing and Regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: “The laying of the final plank is a significant milestone for this incredibly important project, which is a key part of Sunderland’s ongoing transformation. “To get all 91 of these mammoth, steel reinforced pre-cast concrete deck planks put in place so quickly and efficiently in just over one month is testament to the skill and know-how of our partners at VolkerStevin, who are delivering this project that will provide a fantastic new link between a vibrant Keel Square and newly-created Sheepfolds neighbourhood.” To read more click here: https://lnkd.in/e2Grid2Z Sunderland City Council Riverside Sunderland NEPO

We’re proud to announce that VolkerGround Engineering has been shortlisted for two Ground Engineering Magazine Awards. These prestigious awards celebrate outstanding achievements across projects, people, and businesses in ground engineering, bringing together industry leaders from across the sector. VolkerGround Engineering has been shortlisted for an award in the UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of up to £500k category, for the work the team carried out at Rother Tidal Walls – East. This project demonstrated a collaborative and resourceful approach when faced with challenges, such as narrow site access and constrained working widths, during piling along the embankment. The team used a spider excavator to overcome these challenges, it also removed the need for substantial temporary works. To read more about project, follow this link: https://lnkd.in/eRKet_6Y VolkerGround Engineering has also been shortlisted in the UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1M and £3M category.
