Congratulations to Marks and Spencer (M&S), a founding member of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, on introducing five zero-emission, 42-tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech Ts into their supply chain logistics fleet. These all-electric HGVs, delivered as part of the UK Government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, will replace diesel trucks, operating between M&S’s Welham Green distribution centre and stores across London and the Southeast. Through eFREIGHT 2030, M&S is not only reducing carbon emissions but also gaining valuable insights into the performance of electric HGVs, informing future strategies for decarbonising supply chains. A year of progress, a future filled with opportunity. 2024 has been a pivotal year for eFREIGHT 2030, marking significant strides in our shared journey toward decarbonising heavy road freight. Thanks to the hard work and collaboration of all consortium members, we’ve laid a strong foundation for a sustainable future for all. This year, we launched e-FREIGHT 2030, kicking off with a focus on infrastructure development and trial planning. A major milestone came in October when Welch Group deployed the first electric HGV—a 42-tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech T 4×2—beginning real-world operations in regional distribution and long-haul deliveries. Looking ahead to 2025, we expect even greater progress. Electric HGVs from DAF Trucks UK, Scania UK and MAN Truck & Bus UK will hit the roads, and the rollout of charging infrastructure will accelerate. By year’s end, most fleets will have their electric vehicles in operation, gaining practical experience and demonstrating the viability of zero-emission heavy goods transport. Last night at the Transport + Energy Awards 2024, the spotlight shone brightly on the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, led by the Voltempo Group, as we proudly accepted this prestigious award shared with all our consortium members! Held at Warwick Conferences and hosted by automotive industry legend, Quentin Willson, the event was a true celebration of innovation and progress in the transport and energy sectors – we were in very good company! On presenting the award, for Best Commercial Vehicle Decarbonisation Strategy or Project, to Voltempo, for eFREIGHT 2030, the judges said: “Electrifying freight is a monumental challenge, not least because of the infrastructure requirements but also because of how difficult it is to get the vehicle technology together and to make the business case. eFREIGHT at the Motor Transport Decarbonisation Summit. This week at the Motor Transport Decarbonisation Summit in Birmingham, Michael Boxwell from VOLTEMPO, lead of the eFREIGHT 2030 initiative, joined Steffan Eldred from Innovate UK and the #ZEHID projects for an in-depth panel discussion. Together, they explored the progress and insights we are gaining from these real-world demonstrations on zero emission HGVs. For eFREIGHT 2030, it’s all about prioritising fleet operators’ needs—listening to what matters and providing hands-on trial support every step of the way. Our first vehicle is already on the road with Welch Group, with more soon to follow. Through our consortium, we’re building a safe, secure, and shared-access HGV charging network—the largest of its kind in the UK. Beyond our core consortium, eFREIGHT 2030 aims to reach out to the wider industry with its Associate Member Programme, which will allow additional fleets to explore how eHGVs could work in their operations. #MotorTransport #DecarbonisationSummit

Our final Quarterly Review Meeting (QRM) of 2024 at Chesterford Research Park brought together the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium for another inspiring session of collaboration and forward planning. As we set the stage for our next quarter, we celebrated the progress already made, including the arrival of the project’s first eHGV at Welch’s Transport, which is already hard at work demonstrating electric trucks in real world operation.  A big thank you to Welch Group for hosting us at their Duxford site, where we had the chance to see the Renault Trucks E-Tech T up close – and to grab the opportunity for an eFREIGHT 2030 group photo!
