🌟 Ayuk Irene's Journey of Resilience and Culinary Dreams 🌟 From a small village in Nfuni, Cameroon, to the vibrant kitchens of Buea, Ayuk Irene’s journey has been one of strength, hope, and an unbreakable dream to become a chef 🍳 Life hasn’t been easy. Losing her father at a young age, Ayuk took on work in local shops, farms, and city labour, often earning less than £6 a day to help support her own education. When a friend told her about studying catering and pastry, Ayuk’s heart was set on it, yet financial barriers made it feel out of reach. Her spark of hope was reignited when she learned about a Culinary Arts training centre supported by Waste to Wonder Worldwide. This opportunity meant that her dream of studying culinary arts could finally become a reality, opening a pathway toward a future she never thought possible 🤩 Now, as a student Chef at Johnsons Vocational Training Centre, Ayuk is mastering the art of catering and pastry 🥐 dreaming of opening a small catering business of her own one day. Her story is a powerful reminder of how a single opportunity, backed by the right support, can transform lives, allowing people to not only pursue their dreams but to build a brighter future! We’re deeply honoured to support Ayuk on this journey, and we’re inspired by her courage and vision every step of the way 🩷 Hayley Smith Vince Smith Michael Amos Tom Holdsworth The Burnt Chef Project Kris Hall MIH Conor Spacey Taz Khan MBE Orock Thomas Eyong Paula Carey Linda Glover alex rampelt Alan Cooper NICK GLOVER - 🟡🟢🔴🔵 Action - Be Your Best - Assoc CIPD Mihai RIZAN Paul Curtis John Hume United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) United Nations Supply Change Social Value Portal The Sustainable Procurement Pledge FoodSpace #ZeroWaste #ZeroToLandfill #Sustainability #Philanthropy #Environment #CircularEconomy #SocialImpact #SocialValue #ESG #CSR #UnitedNations #ClimateCrisis #SustainabilityGoals

In recent months, some high-profile companies, including bp, have re-evaluated or even stepped back from their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments. Notably, BP walked away from its target to reduce emissions by 35 percent by 2030. This trend sends ripples across industries, particularly for companies that genuinely aim to integrate sustainable and ethical practices into their core operations. As the Managing Director of Waste to Wonder Worldwide, I urge businesses to reconsider the immense value of ESG in procurement. Procurement is a powerful lever to achieve ESG goals, helping to not only improve your environmental footprint but also support the communities you operate in. Why ESG in Procurement is Essential? For future thinking companies, ESG is not a mere checkbox; it's a strategic advantage. Consumers, investors, and employees alike are demanding higher standards for environmental responsibility and social impact. Forward-thinking companies recognize that genuine ESG commitments are crucial for long-term viability and resilience in an evolving market landscape. Integrating ESG into procurement specifically strengthens a company’s foundation by reducing risks, improving supply chain resilience, and increasing brand loyalty. A robust ESG strategy attracts purpose-driven talent, aligns with evolving regulations, and opens doors to new markets. By embedding ESG principles in procurement, companies future-proof themselves against disruptions while playing an active role in tackling global challenges. Steps to Avoid Greenwashing 2.0 Define Clear Metrics and Targets: ESG commitments in procurement should be measurable. Define KPIs that align with the broader ESG strategy, including CO₂ reduction, ethical sourcing, and support for local and minority-owned suppliers. This transparency prevents superficial sustainability claims. Choose Responsible Partners: Selecting suppliers who align with your ESG principles is crucial. Look for partners with verified certifications and a track record of ethical and sustainable practices, which means seeking more than just a checkbox for compliance. Engage in Transparent Reporting: Beyond annual ESG reports, create channels for stakeholders to review progress, question policies, and hold the organization accountable. This transparency discourages greenwashing and builds trust. Invest in Long-Term Social Impact: Procurement decisions have far-reaching consequences. By prioritising vendors who actively work toward social upliftment, businesses can contribute to lasting change in communities rather than offering one-off initiatives that look good on paper but lack impact. Let’s make ESG in procurement more than just a marketing tool. When companies stay committed to genuine, impactful, and measurable goals, they not only benefit their bottom line but also contribute to a future we can all stand behind. Remember, sustainability isn’t just a strategy; it’s our shared responsibility.
