A career in policing could be on the cards for local university students, after they got a taste of what a career as a police officer has to offer. Last week, we welcomed undergraduate students from Birmingham City University, University of Wolverhampton and University of Worcester to Hindlip Hall, for our first ever Employability Day. This was an opportunity for us to demonstrate the various avenues available to police officers once they have completed their training. Students took part in sessions that covered opportunities as a detective investigating crime, what the role of a firearms officer is, as well as an interactive session on how police officers protect themselves. Thank you to everyone who attended, and we are looking to seeing you all again soon!

A team of West Mercia Police officers have overcome obstacles to complete an intrepid adventure to deliver reconditioned fire engines and ambulances to The Gambia. Inspector Dan Poucher, Police Sergeants Rob ‘Swoosh’ Seewoosaha and Kayley Perkins, together with Police Constables Chris Fowler and Danny Evans, were among those who drove disused vehicles procured by the Emergency Services Aid Charity to complete the 3,000 mile journey. They joined a group of 65 volunteers in a convoy of 20 fire engines and ambulances travelling across Spain and Gibraltar, then via ferry to Morocco, before driving through Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and finally The Gambia. The team departed Defford, Worcestershire, on 12 September to deliver the vital reconditioned unused vehicles to the African country and are now due to fly back today. But it was not all plain sailing as the convoy were held up by Moroccan Customs who would not let them out of the Tanger Med port for three days while paperwork was sorted which put them behind schedule. The vehicles then got stuck in mud when a thunderstorm washed the road away as they approached the Senegalese border from Mauritania. However, they battled on to make the time back that they lost in Tanger Med and after the quagmire put them back by two days. Today, on National Police Memorial Day, we remember our officers and colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their communities or died on duty. Temporary Chief Constable Richard Cooper will be attending the annual service at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, to honour the dedication and courage of police officers in West Mercia Police and across the four countries. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those we have lost. 🕊️ 💙

Earlier today, we held a local act of remembrance service to honor fallen colleagues ahead of National Police Memorial Day on Sunday (29 Sept). An opportunity for us to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our communities. This Sunday, on National Police Memorial Day, we join forces across the country in remembrance. The national commemoration will take place in Glasgow, a poignant reminder of the courage and selflessness shown by colleagues who are no longer with us, but whose legacy will never be forgotten.

(SOUND ON 🔊) It's International Dog Day! We couldn't let such a day pass without celebrating our wonderful dogs, past and present, and this #InternationalDogDay we wanted to draw attention to the West Mercia Retired Police Dogs Welfare Fund. We filmed this little skit with three of our fantastic Retired Police Dogs, RPD Chase, RPD Zoe and RPD Stevie. When a police dog retires, they and their handlers can face many challenges, one of which is difficulty finding insurance. This means covering costs such as vets bills or physiotherapy can be difficult and this is where the welfare fund steps in. If you'd like to find out more, follow the retired dogs social pages or to donate, please find links in the comments below 😊 🐕🦺
