About us
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve and permeate different aspects of our lives, it becomes imperative to address the need for regulation. The regulation of AI is necessary as it creates a framework that ensures the rights and values of individuals are protected while fostering innovation. By establishing clear guidelines and standards, regulated AI promotes accountability and minimises risks, ultimately creating a safer and more beneficial environment for everyone. Governments around the world have begun to develop global regulations for AI, and the Regulatory Services Division of BSI is taking a proactive approach to meet the needs of these regulations. While initially aligning to the EU AI Act, BSI is currently working towards designation as an AI notified body, focussing on AI products that require notified body oversight, as well as providing services to manufacturers and software providers proactively seeking impartial assessments of their AI-enabled products and AI Quality Management Systems.

The clock is ticking as the 2 February 2025 deadline for the EU AI Act approaches. Designed to regulate AI technologies within the EU, the Act includes strict prohibitions to protect individuals and uphold ethical standards. Among these are: - Emotion recognition in the workplace and education institutions, unless for medical or safety reasons (i.e. AI systems used in detecting the state of fatigue of professional pilots or drivers for the purpose of preventing accidents). - AI systems using indiscriminate scraping of biometric data from the internet or CCTV footage to create facial recognition databases. These measures aim to ensure AI serves as a force for good while addressing potential risks proactively. The EU AI Act is more than a set of rules; it’s a call for accountability and innovation to coexist.
