Packaging can play a pivotal role in the allure of high-end retail products, especially in luxury fragrances, enhancing the overall brand experience and reinforcing the product’s exclusivity. Despite this, there is a growing awareness of the environmental impact of the retail sector. Consumers demand transparency and products marketed as sustainable grew 2.7x faster than those that were not. Brands respond by sharing their sustainability journey, from sourcing to packaging. Conscious shoppers wield their purchasing power to support positive change. As the world embraces sustainability, BSI aspires to be partners throughout the customer journey, fostering collaborations with suppliers to uphold ethical standards and drive sustainability initiatives across the retail sector. Food packaging often brings to mind discarded wrappers littering the street and plastic bottles floating in our waterways. However, food packaging is an essential component in the farm-to-fork supply chain. Packaging is important in protecting, preserving and containing produce, but it also plays a vital role in conveying information, branding and marketing messages. As consumers are becoming increasingly aware of brand sustainability, how can organizations ensure they maintain best practice around packaging? Joanna Griffiths, Global Consumer, Retail and Food Community Director, explores how education, proactivity and proof can help to drive lasting change: https://lnkd.in/ed2VGh9S #BSI #SustainablePackaging #PlasticPollution #FoodWaste

In 2020, Morrisons began selling carbon-neutral eggs in 50 of its stores as part of a pilot scheme. While the carbon footprint of the eggs was calculated by industry experts using systems verified by the University of Cambridge, Morrisons sought an independent and consumer-recognised certification scheme to help provide customers with the assurance that a carbon-neutral status had been reached. Working closely with Morrisons and the farmer, we led an independent assessment against the international standards required to achieve the Kitemark. Initially, the egg's carbon footprint stood at 1.56 kg of carbon per 1 kg of egg. Through operational changes, feed adjustments, and staging consumer use scenarios, they successfully reduced this figure by 60%! Congratulations to Chippindale Foods Ltd for being awarded ‘Innovation of the Year’ at the 2024 National Egg & Poultry Awards, a prestigious awards ceremony backed by the British Poultry Council, the British Egg Industry Council and the NFU (National Farmers' Union) to honour and reflect achievement, excellence and best practice in the sector. The company’s recognition came as part of their ‘Better For Our Planet’ eggs, a brand of eggs sold in Morrisons supermarkets that have been sustainably farmed and have been certified to the BSI Kitemark for carbon neutral products. We congratulate Chippindale Foods on their success, read more about how the eggs were certified to the BSI Kitemark for carbon neutral products and achieved a carbon footprint reduction of 60%: https://lnkd.in/eqQT83jx #Kitemark
