🌍While globally the rollout of solutions continues to grow, we are failing to keep pace with the climate and nature crises, and trends continue to head in the wrong direction. 🦋This year, the climate COP falls just a week after the biodiversity COP has concluded in Colombia, and it is now more important than ever that world leaders take an integrated approach to nature and climate to accelerate action for a sustainable future. 🗳️Finding common ground at COP29 Azerbaijan will be more challenging than ever given the continued growth in populist and nationalist politics, political instability, with key election outcomes yet to be announced, and significant intergovernmental tensions. ➡️However, this COP presents a crucial opportunity to bring together global efforts on climate change and to send a clear signal about the scale and speed of action required. ⏰Now is the time to act. 🍃Nature risk 🟰financial risk On Monday at COP16 Colombia in Cali, our Director of the Centre for Sustainable Finance (CISL), Dr Nina Seega, moderated a panel of speakers who discussed 'Nature risk is financial risk: Case studies from the market.' Organised by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the discussion centred on the need to highlight the financial consequences of organisations not understanding and managing their nature-related issues. The event highlighted how organisations are taking action to avoid financial consequences, incorporating it into their strategies and showing why they are using TNFD to do so. 🌊To reach nature positive the finance sector needs to understand the value of water which is critical for a sustainable economy. This event at COP16 Colombia, led by United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) explored the need to strengthen the economic case for water, the risks for the finance sector in not being aware of water related impacts & the need to galvanise action in the sector. Our Nature Finance expert, Sara Taaffe, shared insights from a use case conducted with HSBC which explored a scenario of water stress and was joined by Thomas Maddox, Cate Lamb & Joe Ray. 🦜At #COP16, we're urging leaders to embed nature in economic, policy and commercial decision-making. 🤝This can be achieved by building capability and decision support tools to make effective decisions that factor and price in nature-related risk, opportunity and impact. Policy needs to ➡️Place nature at the heart of policy making and regulation, particularly for key sectors like agriculture and food production, land and water management and extractive industries. Business needs to ➡️Integrate nature as a core component of business models, innovation and strategy, and shift value chains, industries and supply chains to address the drivers of nature destruction.
