Helping businesses to grow internationally. Head of International and Transactional Banking, Santander UK

How do some of the top global markets view the UK as a trading partner? Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hosting an event at our Santander work café in London to mark the launch of a new report undertaken by Public First, and commissioned by Santander UK, which explores this topic at length. And we were thrilled to be joined by the new Minister for Services, Small Business and Exports, Gareth Thomas MP. The report puts a spotlight on the UK as a trading partner for #India, #Japan, #Poland, #Spain and the #US. It uncovers the level of enthusiasm for the UK as a business partner, potential roadblocks and explores the role that a partnership between government, businesses and the wider private sector can play in creating an effective trade strategy. From the results, it’s clear that the UK remains strong and there’s a great sense of opportunity for businesses. Especially over the next decade, as it looks set to continue its specialisation as a producer of professional services – namely financial, digital and business services. But it isn’t all sunshine. The report doesn’t shy away from the barriers to trade, and some perceptions of the UK post-Brexit and a slight dip in the manufacturing sector are causes for concern. With just 10% of UK SMEs exporting internationally, more can be done to make #internationaltrade journeys easier – and help businesses capitalise on the UK’s growing reputation. As outlined in the report, bridging the gap between businesses, the private sector and the government is crucial. We were grateful to have Minister Thomas, who highlighted that this report is a blueprint of opportunity and emphasised how key it is that we continue to work with the business community and make a combined effort to increase international trade. This sentiment is reflected in our goals at Santander, and especially in our international trade platform: Santander Navigator. We’re going beyond traditional banking services to help break down the barriers that can stop international growth in its tracks, and create more opportunities for UK businesses. We built #SantanderNavigator to make international trade simple. We strive to give UK businesses the building blocks they need to succeed internationally whether that's identifying growth opportunities, optimising logistics or building connections. It certainly feels like an exciting time to consider international markets. The report shows that the opportunities for growth over the next decade are endless, particularly in the digital and business services space. And the UK is at the forefront for green exports, showing promising growth for the environmental sector. Thank you to everyone who joined us for an important discussion, including members from TheCityUK, The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade and ScaleUp Institute. • What would you do if your business was targeted by scammers? Saagar was close to becoming a victim of a fake invoice scam. The scammer was very convincing and tried to trick him into thinking they were one of his suppliers. His gut feeling was to check directly with his supplier before making a payment. Thanks to that feeling, he stopped the scam before any money was stolen. Head to our page to watch the full video and learn more on fraud prevention for your business. http://ms.spr.ly/6045l9NhW
