On #WorldRefugeeDay, there are more refugees in the world than ever before. Displacement in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine drive millions to hunger. In mid-2023, 110 million people worldwide were displaced, and 43.3 million of them --- or 40% --- were children under 18. By now, that number has risen even higher. Action Against Hunger works closely with refugees to help them rebuild their lives. Many of our staff members are refugees themselves. Every day, we work to prevent and treat malnutrition, provide mental health services, improve access to water and sanitation, and support displaced people, wherever they end up. As conflict in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine rages on, our teams face the displacement crisis head-on. Action Against Hunger HEARO https://bit.ly/3xgpLpD

Conflict is escalating worldwide, exposing families to violence, abuse, and destruction of their homes, farms, and essential services. This turmoil often triggers severe mental health crises that, though less visible, are pervasive and profound. In Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Action Against Hunger is helping communities with mental health and psychosocial support. https://bit.ly/47rqjXf

In the West Bank, Action Against Hunger is working with farmers to grow and harvest vegetables. For many Palestinians, this land is the promise of future opportunities. Most of the farmers reside live in Al-Issawiya, a village in northeast Jerusalem. Here, they live on a small part of the land, because Israel’s government restricts building and expansion outside of a sectioned area. Now, Action Against Hunger is connecting them with the farmland beyond. Our teams are building water supply facilities, opening roads, and helping farmers cultivate their crops. “I have found my passion and peace in planting and tending my land,” said one farmer. https://bit.ly/4e7S61C

For farmers in Zambia, connecting to local markets can save livelihoods and lives. 66-year-old Sitwala was facing hard times --- and a deadly drought --- when he decided to participate in Action Against Hunger’s new climate-resilient initiative. “We were introduced to black-eyed pea seeds, which are drought resistant and can withstand dry periods. We were trained in the best way to plant and grow them,” said Sitwala. “The cowpeas are growing really well. Yet the biggest challenge we will face going forward is selling them.” Learn about how our teams connected Sitwala with local buyers and helped him boost his business for years: https://bit.ly/3MzxFhK

Can you imagine being an immigrant in your own country? 🌍 Over 700,000 people have been deported from Pakistan and forced to return to Afghanistan. One father, Jan Mohammad, had lived in Pakistan for 10 years before his life was uprooted within moments. Now, he must start from scratch. “In Pakistan, I used to work as a construction worker and gardener, which was enough to support my family,” he said. “After being deported [to Afghanistan], we have been living in ruins and sometimes at people’s places. Now we are constantly on the move like migrants, and our entire life has been trapped in this reality.” Read more of his story: https://bit.ly/4dFPEio

Our MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) teams held a workshop in Kampala, Uganda, which served as a pivotal platform for standardizing practices, enhancing skills, and aligning approaches. The intensive focus on data management and integration, mainly through DHIS2 training, has set the stage for a unified data system. This integration is crucial for ensuring all stakeholders access accurate, up-to-date information for effective decision-making and program monitoring. Additionally, the workshop included training on Network Performance ADS, enhancing technical infrastructure, and optimizing systems to ensure seamless data flow and communication across the network. Beyond skills, the workshop fostered collaboration and networking among participants, facilitating the exchange of challenges, solutions, and innovations. This collective knowledge sharing will help adapt best practices to local contexts and improve MEAL processes across the region, for everyone for good.
