In case you missed it, the Task Force on Fiscal Policy for Health, co-chaired by Mike Bloomberg, Lawrence H. Summers and Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, recently released a powerful new report. The findings show that if countries increase excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary beverages enough to raise prices by 50 percent, it could raise an astounding $3.7 trillion (USD) over the next five years. Additionally, $2.1 trillion (USD) of this revenue could be raised in low- and middle-income countries, where the health burden is greatest, and 50 million premature deaths could be prevented over the next 50 years! Health taxes offer a straightforward, effective way to save lives, ease fiscal pressures and improve public health outcomes globally. Drowning is preventable, yet awareness about the issue and solutions, especially in high-burden countries, is limited. To address this, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Global Health Advocacy Incubator launched the Drowning Prevention Emerging Leaders Program, training a cohort of young leaders to elevate solutions and political commitment to combat drowning. This year-long program brought together emerging leaders from academia, media, civil society and government to strengthen their capacity and leadership skills. Participants developed Capstone projects to address drowning issues in their home countries and presented them at global conferences. Following the collaborative efforts of GHAI and local partners, the Ugandan government approved a groundbreaking 57.8 billion Uganda shillings (approx. $15.4 million) for epidemic preparedness in the 2024-25 fiscal year. ⭐️ Program Spotlight: Data for Health ⭐️ There is still so much more work to be done to make the world better prepared to prevent, detect and respond to future epidemics. This is why we at the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) are supporting civil society organizations in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia to advocate for sustainable investments in #epidemicpreparedness in their countries and to hold their governments accountable. The return on investment for epidemic preparedness is $14 to $1! And we’re seeing results: our work contributed to the doubling of funding for the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, establishing new budget lines for epidemic preparedness and response in Lagos and Kano; and raising public demand and government interest in establishing a public health emergency fund in Ghana. Recently, we advocated to secure an unprecedented UGX 57.8 billion (US$15.4million) for epidemic preparedness in Uganda! To share our experiences and lessons learned, we have established the CSO Budget Advocacy Academy: a comprehensive nine-month program to strengthen civil society capacity for budget advocacy in the Africa region. You can find our resources—which include toolkits, an e-learning platform and more—right here: https://lnkd.in/ees7KhZY #10YearsofImpact

In September, our Overdose Prevention Initiative celebrated #NationalRecoveryMonth by hosting events that raised awareness about addiction recovery and promoted access to lifesaving treatments—including holding our 3rd Annual Congressional Naloxone Training, with over 50 staffers in attendance learning how to recognize and respond to opioid overdoses. We also partnered with Faces & Voices of Recovery on their podcast to discuss our advocacy strategies and participated in SAMHSA’s Walk for Recovery. The commitment continues—beyond National Recovery Month, we’re dedicated every day to advancing policies that prevent overdose and support recovery. Did you know that the sugary drinks industry has a well-oiled global playbook designed to fight against life-saving taxes? Sweetened beverage taxes have been proven to reduce their consumption and improve public health, but Big Soda isn’t backing down. Their tactics are designed to undermine progress and prioritize profits over people. Our latest Sweetened Profits report uncovers the strategies the industry uses to resist these essential health measures. From aggressive lobbying to funding biased research, the report sheds light on how they’re working to block policy changes worldwide. https://lnkd.in/eU4RUDg8 #Report #PublicHealth #HealthPolicy #Nutrition #GlobalHealth

Drowning, a preventable tragedy, continues to claim over 300,000 lives annually, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the devastating toll it takes on families, this issue remains underreported in global media. To address this, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies, recently hosted a Toolkit for Journalists on Drowning Prevention workshop in Bangkok. The workshop brought together 17 journalists from Bangladesh, India, Uganda and Vietnam to highlight the vital role media can play in raising awareness and driving government action on this critical public health issue. Journalists participated in expert-led sessions, role plays and tool testing to learn how accurate, engaging and timely reporting can spotlight the urgent need for drowning prevention measures worldwide. #WorldHeartDay 2024: Our ❤️, Our Drones, Our Action! Despite its treacherous terrain and poor rural outlook, the people of the Tehri Garhwal district in India’s Uttarakhand State know resilience. One of Mt Everest’s youngest summiteers—Arvind Raturi—is part of that community. But for many others in his community, who are mostly poor farmers, this is not the case. Many are struggling with rudimentary farming. They have limited options to prevent and manage prevalent #heart conditions—especially hypertension. Strengthening health systems to cater for the #hearthealth of people of such hard-to-navigate communities, with competing development needs, can be extremely challenging. So, we joined our cutting-edge partner—the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, aiims rishikesh Healthy Food to act. With drones, AIIMS is delivering heart-related medical supplies to the district over three times faster. This World Heart Day, our own Vandana Shah and AIIMS Rishikesh’s Executive Director, Prof. Meenu Singh, celebrate the milestone of reaching those most in need, ensuring timely access to essential medications and saving lives from the silent threat of hypertension. Let’s #UseHeartForAction ❤️ today and every day. #CardiovascularHealth #India
