  • Breakthrough Collaborative's Human First Framework supports the social-emotional and cultural development of middle school students and teaching fellows. Since 2021, the Human First Framework has supported more than 4,800 middle school students, helping ensure their success in high school and beyond. Learn more about the curriculum on Breakthrough Collaborative’s LinkedIn page. #grantmaking #education #middleschool

Improving outcomes in education requires that we center humanity in everything we do at Breakthrough. In 2021, Breakthrough Collaborative, with support from All Points North Foundation, developed our Human First Framework to support the social-emotional and cultural development of more than 4,800 middle school students and 1,000 Teaching Fellows. During the first year of implementation (summer 2022), students grew an average of 2.1% across all three competency areas: Knowledge and Love of Self, Solidarity, and Self-Determination. In summer 2023, students grew an average of 1.37%. During the first year of implementation, Teaching Fellows grew an average of 1.14% across all three areas last summer. At a time of widening opportunity gaps for students and a shortage of quality and diverse teachers, our work to further educational equity is more critical than ever. Moving forward, the Human First Framework will continue to strengthen how we propel students on their path to college and aspiring teachers on their path to the classroom. https://lnkd.in/gx8ktbDa https://bit.ly/4b7nGKw

During the 2023-24 school year, TNTP trained instructional coaches and 8th-grade math teachers at Van Horn Middle School. Thanks to the support from All Points North Foundation, TNTP Senior Manager of Academics Ranmali DeSilva made monthly visits to the campus for in-depth hands-on coaching, allowing us the opportunity to continue sowing seeds for every young person to access pathways to academic, economic, and social mobility. Directors Allison Corrales and Sondra McCoy said those in-person visits provided a sense of accountability for their team: "It's not here's the information, this is what we expect you to do," Corrales said. "It's here's the information. This is what should happen, and I'll be back in a couple of months to follow up on that." As a result, the school saw a difference in the classroom environments. In fact, 100% of teachers across the campus reported having high expectations of their students, up from 40% in the previous year, increasing students' access to rigorous Algebra I coursework and opportunities for advanced math courses in high school!
