After delivering a strong first half performance, our AngloGold Ashanti CEO Alberto Calderon visited the Australian Business Unit where top of his agenda was a trip to the Tropicana gold mine and its renewables project. He was impressed with the size and complexity of the project and noted that it was something all employees could be proud of. The wind-solar-battery storage facility incorporates four 6MW wind turbines that are 130 metres high and span 165m in rotor diameter. Pacific Energy is integrating 24MW of wind and 24MW of solar power, along with a 13MW battery energy storage system into the existing 54MW power station at Tropicana as part of its 10-year build-own-operate agreement. The project is on track for completion in the first quarter of 2025. Alberto also toured the open pits at Tropicana and spoke to staff in town hall meetings on site and in the Perth office where he thanked them for their efforts, particularly to recover from the extreme rain event that hit both operations in March. “I’m always in awe of what our people can do,” he said. The visit was a great opportunity for employees to not only meet Alberto, but to ask questions, which he openly encouraged with frank responses on topics including geopolitics, the gold price and the importance of the resources sector to Australia’s economy.

AngloGold Ashanti has taken the next step in its decarbonisation journey by linking the Geita Gold Mine in Tanzania to the Tanzanian electricity grid, which is 45.6% supplied by hydro power sources, enabling it to cut carbon emissions from power generation at the mine. This milestone was celebrated with the grand inauguration of a state-of-the-art 33/11kv substation at our Geita mine, officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dotto Mashaka Biteko (MP) witnessed by prominent Government leaders, GGML management and staff, and Geita’s community members.   Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) will be able to reduce fuel consumption for power generation by a significant 80%. Sourcing power from the Tanzania grid is part of the company’s strategy to transition towards cleaner sources of energy. This link to the electricity grid will see GGML reduce its carbon emissions by at least 50 Kt CO2 per annum.   AngloGold Ashanti Tanzania is continuously looking at ways to further the electrification of existing and future power load contributions to reduce scope 1 emissions, with the aim of ultimately replacing all of its diesel-generated power at the site with grid power. Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organization.   The project saw AngloGold Ashanti working closely with the government of Tanzania through TANESCO, the Tanzania power utility. TANESCO financed a 6.1km electricity distribution line from its Mpomvu (220/33kV) substation to a purpose-built substation at the mine. GGML financed and constructed the on-site 33/11kV 80 MVA mine sub-station with the mine planning to draw an average load of 32-34MW, supplying most of its underground mining and processing power needs.

The renewables project at the Tropicana gold mine in Western Australia remains on track for completion in the first quarter of 2025 in what will be the first major step in AngloGold Ashanti’s decarbonisation journey. Pacific Energy is constructing the facility and will continue to operate the combined renewables-gas power station under a 10 year power purchase agreement (PPA). The wind-solar-battery storage facility is the first of its kind to be implemented within the AngloGold Ashanti group and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at Tropicana by 65,000 tonnes per annum over the 10 year life of the PPA. Tropicana is owned by AngloGold Ashanti (70% and manager) and Regis Resources Ltd Resources (30%).

Australia’s largest off-grid hybrid power system at AngloGold Ashanti Australia and Regis Resources Ltd’s Tropicana Gold Mine has marked its first major milestones, including Stage One energisation and the delivery of wind turbine components to site. This massive project will see the expansion of our existing gas-powered system to include 24MW of #wind, 24MW of #solar, and a 13MW BESS, bringing the system size to over 115MW. This industry-leading set up will integrate our Pacific Energy-designed intelligent control system to optimise input from the high penetration renewables and storage technologies and allow the system to run hydrocarbons-free for extended periods of time. Our renewables integration is also expected to reduce AngloGold Ashanti’s diesel and gas consumption for Tropicana’s power generation by 96% and 50% respectively, slashing carbon emissions by an average of 65,000 tonnes per annum over the life of our 10-year agreement. There’s been an enormous amount of work delivered by our specialised teams over the past nine months to help us reach our first milestones. They’re the people powering the #cleanenergy transition, and we’re immensely proud of them. #energytransition #powergeneration #solarpower #windpower #renewableenergy
