Emerging tech can be overwhelming, but "the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step," as Lao Tzu wrote. So if you're looking for a place to begin with #responsibleAI in the social sector and avoid the peaks and valleys of the #hypecycle, here are 5 ways to get started responsibly:
► Create an AI Usage Policy
Start by drafting a policy that covers three key areas:
▪️Classification of data as Public, Non-Sensitive, and Sensitive/Confidential
▪️Approved AI tools for each data type
▪️Responsibilities of AI users within your organization
▪️(I also recommend adding your guiding principles for AI usage.)
► Provide AI Training for Staff
Lack of awareness and training is one of the top barriers to AI adoption, according to research GivingTuesday, the Annenberg Foundation, and others. Moreover, as we found out at the Annenberg Foundation, equitable access to training is a key part of "inclusive AI" for org staff.
► Understand Pragmatic Needs First
Like any technology, AI should address real-world challenges within your organization. Listen to your team to identify these needs (or “use cases”) and ensure that AI is a real solution, not a source of unnecessary complexity.
► Start with Incremental Pilot Projects
Some studies from Wharton, MIT, and others show that organizations succeed with emerging technologies when they start with a portfolio-based approach of small pilots and long-range big plays. Based on your organization's needs, choose 2-3 pilot projects to launch within the next 6 months, focusing on efforts that are interdepartmental. Meanwhile, keep your eye on the transformation horizon.
► Enable Safe Innovation & Experimentation
Research by the Annenberg Foundation (https://lnkd.in/gJeDb43X) highlights that #nonprofit grantees see a higher need for AI than foundation staff, at least in our case. Encourage a culture of safe innovation and experimentation as well as a responsibility to understand and make informed decisions regarding the issues of our time.
Remember, you don’t need to have it all figured out from the start, but you do need guardrails for responsible exploration. I hope this helps you take the first step.
