Creating pathways for underserved students to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers.
About us
The Art of Problem Solving Initiative (originally the Art of Problem Solving Foundation) promotes and provides opportunities for middle and high school students to explore mathematical problem-solving. Our flagship program is Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM). BEAM works with underserved students with high potential in mathematics to build realistic pathways for them to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers. BEAM offers a summer program after 6th grade and a residential summer program after 7th grade, as well as year-round support and weekend programming extending into college. Our goal is to connect our students to the same resources for advanced study that more affluent students receive. BEAM students have gone on to top high schools, universities, and enrichment programs. For more information, visit the BEAM website at www.beammath.org. In addition to BEAM, AoPSI also runs the USA Mathematical Talent Search, a national mail-in proof-based math contest where students have a month to complete five challenging problems in each round. For more information, visit the USAMTS website at www.usamts.org.

Join BEAM's summer teams in NYC and LA! Apply today: https://lnkd.in/e2W9KCUP
It’s that time of year again at Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM)! Join a fun community of math-lovers this summer! BEAM is hiring Counselors/TAs and Faculty to help us build a community of learners where students with high potential are centered as doers of math. Counselors/TAs are role models, guides, and friends to our students as they begin their journey in advanced mathematics. They support classroom instruction and help us to build a positive community of math-lovers at our sites! Roles available in LA/SoCal and NYC/Hudson Valley. Faculty instruct classes that center our students as doers of mathematics and allow them to explore advanced mathematics. Our students have high-potential and are highly engaged in the immersive academic experience BEAM provides. Roles available in LA/SoCal and NYC/Hudson Valley. Learn more about both roles on our website: beammath.org/jobs

Happy π Day from BEAM! At BEAM, we eat a lot of pizza, which led us to ponder a perplexing problem: Let’s say a pepperoni-loving mathematician orders this two-topping pizza to celebrate Pi Day with a friend who happens to love math and mushrooms. Is it possible for them to split such a strangely sliced pizza, so that each gets exactly half of the pizza entirely adorned with their favorite topping? Is the mathematician delighted or disappointed by this unusually divided pizza? Check out our reflection on the pizza pie theorem, which involves pi and pizza-cutting, on our blog. You'll also find fun photos showing just how big our love of pizza is! https://buff.ly/3TA0Fdp #PiDay #πDay

As our high school students apply to summer enrichment opportunities, we want to thank our partner Jane Street for their continued support of our Summer STEM Stipend initiative. Students who attend summer enrichment programs often cannot take summer jobs, which they and their families may be counting on. These stipends reduce the pressure of having to choose between summer employment and participating in an intensive STEM program. To learn more about our 2023 recipients, visit

Initially, FAFSA's form blocked families with mixed immigration statuses from filling it out. Finally, there is a workaround for parents who lack social security numbers, Our college admissions coordinators have been working closely with families to make sure they have the most up-to-date information. Last summer, BEAM piloted an Introduction to Proofs class at Summer Away, Union College. "One of the main goals of the courses at BEAM Summer Away is getting students to start owning the process of proving things mathematically. This involves not only understanding the content that the class is covering, but also developing some habits of mind (and naming them) that mathematicians use every day," says Javier Ronquillo Rivera, BEAM's Math and Pedagogy Manager. To learn more about the course, and other summer takeaways, read our blog post:
