Our Executive Director, Todd D. Smith, and your favorite selfie backdrop — aka "The Firebird" — appeared on WBTV last night. Hear the discussion with Jamie Boll about our city's beloved icon. BTW, today is the birthday of The Firebird's creator, the late French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. #Firebird15 #clt #art #modernart #artandculture #sculptures #icons #iconic #bechtlermuseum

About us
Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, a gem in the Southern art landscape and in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, is devoted to European and American modern art and its legacies. The cornerstone of its holdings are works collected by the Zürich-based Bechtler family and gifted to the museum by Andreas Bechtler and his family, who have long called Charlotte home. Represented here are some of the most influential figures of 20th century modernism, including Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Barbara Hepworth. Now in its second decade, the museum is focused on the global scope of modernism, with changing exhibitions that feature both well-known and underrepresented modernist artists as well as living artists. The museum building, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, features Niki de Saint Phalle’s iconic Le Grand Oiseau de Feu sur l’Arche (The Firebird) on its entrance plaza. The Bechtler also serves as a hub for live music, artist talks, cocktail hours for young creatives and family events. For more: www.bechtler.org.

The brightness of "The Firebird" meets the brilliance of Mark Washburn who celebrates 15 years of Charlotte's favorite selfie backdrop in this article for The Charlotte Observer. Check it out! And cheers to 15 years of "The Firebird" in the Queen City. "To say it's iconic doesn't even do it justice," says our executive director Todd D. Smith. #Firebird15 #modernart #clt #selfiespot

Today marks the date 15 years ago that "The Firebird" sculpture was installed on the entrance plaza of Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The Firebird underwent conservation work for a few days before being officially unveiled, but today is the perfect day to come visit and grab a selfie with our sparkling local celebrity. Be amazed all over again that The Firebird calls the Bechtler, and Charlotte, home. Share your selfies here and be sure to tag us on all social media! #bechtlermuseum #Firebird15 #modernart #visitbechtler #uptowncharlotte . . .

Thanks to Axios Charlotte for this shoutout of our newest fall exhibition, "Clare Rojas: Past the Present." https://lnkd.in/eg8ZEHJ6 Why should you come see it? Well, it's the first exhibition of Rojas' work in the South in almost two decades. And our curator, Katia Zavistovski, explains that Rojas' ability to weave together stories "through metaphor, symbology and fantastical imagery creates bewitching ecosystems that link the past and present, the mystical and mundane." Come see for yourself. #visitbechtler #modernart #clarerojas #ecofeminism Clare Rojas, “My Pet Black Widow” (detail), 2020, oil on linen. Collection of Lauren and Jaime Ford

🎶 She's just a girl and she's on fire... 🎶 Kudos to Myers Park High School Senior Bridget Conrad (daughter of Robin and Christian Conrad) who will be a Sugar Plum Fairy in Harris YMCA Dance Company's production of "The Nutcracker," Dec. 21 and 22. We loved seeing these photos of this Sugar Plum Fairy with The Firebird. 🔥

#ICYMI Figured you wouldn't want to miss this feature article in The Charlotte Ledger, in which our executive director Todd D. Smith demystifies modern art. Read, then visit us, so you can "meet the artist halfway." See you at the Bechtler. #modernart #artappreciation #appreciatebechtler #discoveryourself #visitbechtler
Ledger writer Lindsey Banks makes it OK not to understand modern art and also to want to get to know it better. She takes the reader on an entertaining tour of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, where artwork like Clare Rojas’ “Tired of Thinking” (pictured here) is on display through Jan. 20. She shares insights from Bechtler executive director Todd Smith, who offers his tips on how to better understand and appreciate contemporary art. “You don’t have to agree with the artist,” Smith said. “You can, at the end, but you sort of have to meet them and say, ‘OK, what are they trying to do?’ And the second thing that I always think about is, is the work of art a window, or is it a mirror? Meaning, is it a window into something you don’t know, to a new place, or is it a mirror back on you?” 📷Photo courtesy of Bechtler Museum.
