On President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, we’re honoring his legacy as a global health champion. In 1986, President Carter learned that Guinea worm, which infected an estimated 3.5 million people annually in Africa and Asia, had no known cure, vaccine, or treatment. Alongside The Carter Center, he launched a global campaign to eradicate the disease, and today the number of people infected with Guinea worm has decreased by 99.99%. His legacy reminds us that with determination, cooperation, funding, and the power of innovation, it’s possible to eliminate preventable diseases. Around the world, millions of women don’t have access to financial tools, like savings accounts and credit. For Bangladeshi mother and entrepreneur, Morzina, that meant she didn’t have savings to pay for care when her son became ill. After that experience, she opened a bank account and began saving. Then when her husband later became ill, she was able to get him medical help immediately. When women get access to digital financial tools and services—enabled by digital public infrastructure (DPI)—they have more opportunities to save money, build businesses, and raise their families out of poverty. In Bangladesh, this is transforming lives and leading to stronger local and national economies: https://gates.ly/3ZFX3u0

For years, Ugandan farmer Jennipher dealt with the worsening effects of climate change, as heat and torrential rains ruined her crops. But when she got access to climate-resilient beans, her life changed. Now, she produces enough beans to sell locally, growing nutritious foods for her community and building economic power for herself and her family. Jennipher’s story reminds us that investments in women in agriculture are key to building a more resilient and equal world: https://gates.ly/3ztw0aJ
