Update from the Field: In Tokpli, Togo, traditional chiefs and community members revisited disputed land boundaries, emphasizing the need for accurate georeferenced data. With conflicting claims unresolved on-site, collected data is now being processed by mapping experts. This highlights how community-driven data collection and geospatial tools are critical for informed decision-making and sustainable conflict resolution. From Santa Cruz to Saamaka to Cali!!! Today at COP16 Colombia in Cali, we witnessed powerful voices from Indigenous and Afro Descent tribal youth leaders across the Amazon and Uganda, emphasizing the vital role of traditional knowledge in preserving biodiversity. While our elder, a shaman from the Matapi and Yucuna community, reminded us of the deep connection between culture and the environment, urging us to recognize the wisdom of elders. The youth shared their commitment to safeguarding their territories and cultural identity, highlighting the urgent need for better living conditions for youth in their communities. As young leaders, we are not just the future; we are the present, advocating for sustainable practices and cultural preservation. They called on stakeholders to provide real solutions and support for youth to stay connected to their land and heritage. A call for action to our partner organizations : As I reflect on their stories, please continue committing to amplifying our voices and fostering collaboration that honors our ancestral knowledge and protects our planet's biodiversity. Listen to what we have to say and actually do something with our input otherwise it’s just words. We have inherited too many broken promises that our ancestors had no choice but to keep. No more!!! Yesterday at COP16 Colombia, we had the opportunity to meet with our partner, UNIPA Unidad Indígena del Pueblo Awá in the southwestern part of #Colombia. They discussed their progress in their project, Strengthening Biocultural and Cartographic Governance, under Cadasta Foundation’ Land for Climate and Forest Rights Project. The project focuses on training, technology, and support to ensure precise demarcation and legal recognition of the ancestral territories of the Awá people through delineation and georeferencing of reserves such as El Gran Sábalo, Hojal La Turbia, Pingullo Sardinero, and others. This process prioritizes community participation and transparency to strengthen territorial autonomy and natural resource management in alignment with cultural practices and internal governance.
