Today is the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision, marking an egregious backslide in American reproductive rights. The right of every person to make decisions about their own body is fundamental, and we must be vigilant to ensure that we don’t continue to turn back the clock for this and future generations. We must push for legislation that protects and expands access to reproductive healthcare, support organizations providing vital services, and educate young people about their rights and options. We must also provide healthcare that acknowledges the increasingly complex realities women and AFAB people face and address the systemic inequalities that hinder true reproductive freedom. This decision came down three months before Caraway launched, galvanizing us to further prioritize offering comprehensive, evidence-based reproductive health services, including medication abortion. These services are fully integrated with primary and mental healthcare, and remain a crucial part of how we serve Caraway members. On this anniversary, we reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that every woman has the autonomy to make informed decisions about her body, her health and her future. Together, we can create a world where reproductive justice is not just a vision but a reality for all 💜

We're really proud of the work we're doing to change the healthcare landscape, but sometimes, we think it's best to hear from members about their experience with Caraway. That's why we're sharing a few recent reviews — so you can hear firsthand how members feel about the work we do for and with them every day. 💜 "I cannot say enough good things about this app. I struggle to get access to reliable healthcare, and Caraway has saved me countless times. The Care Team has always has a response in under 5 minutes, and on top of that, they are so sweet and supportive! If you're looking for healthcare from your phone, look no further!" - Alice 💜 "One of the easiest ways to access a doctor, nurse, or mental health professional. Everyone is super kind and helpful, and I truly feel everyone should have this kind of access to healthcare. Definitely give it a shot." - Jesse 💜 "I'm the type that puts off going to the doctor because of all the work around researching, finding, and scheduling an appointment. Downloading, registering, and getting set up on Caraway was a breeze. I was able to share what was going on and get the help I needed without the usual pain of finding a doctor and getting an appointment. I recommend it to all my friends and family." - Madison

Today, I’m so excited for Caraway to partner with Evvy on #EqualResearchDay, a campaign dedicated to rectifying the glaring holes in medical research regarding women’s health. This work feels personal—not only because I’m a woman but also because it is central to why I founded Caraway in the first place. For too long, women’s medical concerns have been passed off or overlooked, creating a gender health gap that we must start to close. Caraway’s strategic focus on an often overlooked population is not just about addressing a particular demographic; it’s actually an approach to improving healthcare for everyone. By avoiding the pitfalls, blind spots, and assumptions of traditional care models, we can provide more comprehensive and effective care for all. Please take some time to look at this important work and support #EqualResearchDay as we all work to #closethegenderhealthgap

It’s #EqualResearchDay! 💥 Evvy created #EqualResearchDay on June 10 because women weren’t required in U.S. clinical research until June 10th, 1993 (Think Equal Pay Day but for the gender health gap!) To this day, there are countless holes ⚫ in our scientific and medical understanding of the female body — and that directly impacts us as patients. If you’ve ever experienced delays in diagnoses, failed treatments, mystery symptoms with no answers, or medical gaslighting — #EqualResearchDay is for you. This year, we brought together 46 innovative companies and compiled 100 Effed Facts about the Gender Health Gap across 12 health areas: ⚫ Autoimmune Disease ⚫ Brain + Mental Health ⚫ Cancer ⚫ Endometriosis ⚫ Fertility ⚫ Heart Health ⚫ Hormonal Health ⚫ Maternal Health ⚫ Medical Gaslighting ⚫ Menopause ⚫ Menstrual & Sexual Health ⚫ Vaginal & Urinary Health Earlier this week, we launched a limited-edition coffee table book featuring all 100 Effed Facts to benefit Women's Health Access Matters (you can order a copy at EqualResearchDay.com before they sell out... !) But we decided these facts are too important not to share widely — so we are posting a public version here on LinkedIn. 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣:  💥 Share this post (and add your story about why equal research matters to you)!  💥 Learn more and shop the limited edition coffee table book to benefit WHAM at EqualResearchDay.com The female body shouldn’t be a medical mystery — together, let’s close the gender health gap for good. #equalresearchday2024 #evvy #genderhealthgap #closethegenderhealthgap ——— 2024 Equal Research Day Collaborative: Evvy Aavia adyn Allara AOA Dx Bloomer Tech Caraway Clue Cofertility Conceive Diem DotLab Doveras Elektra Health Elix Frame Gabbi Gaia Gameto Health In Her HUE HerMD Hey Jane The Honey Pot Company Iron Health Julie Products Inc. Dr. Michelle Gourdine, chief medical officer at CVS Caremark, recently claimed that over 90 million Americans have poor health literacy. This means that over 90 million Americans lack the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions. That’s a major problem — one we’re working on addressing with our members every day at Caraway. The healthcare system is notoriously difficult to navigate, which is why we have health advisors and counselors who work with members to help them understand basic concepts that, for the average person, actually aren’t so basic. We take it as a personal responsibility to work with this generation and future generations to ensure they not only have access to care but also understand how to access that care and ask for exactly what they need. Our goal is to help members navigate the impossibly complicated system we have today and to push for the simplification of that system — there's no reason it should be this difficult to take care of yourself. https://lnkd.in/eYsMCEmv

Our Chief Health Officer, Cheryl Baggeroer Turner, shared her thoughts on #mentalhealthawareness month and all the amazing work our Care Team is doing to meet member needs now and always. Check it out! ⤵ 💜

    Chief Health Officer at Caraway

I was lucky enough to be a psychiatry resident at the University of Washington while Wayne Katon was an attending and developing the research base behind the Collaborative Care Model. I was an intern when I heard him first explain the connections between depression, pain, and diabetes. His conclusion was simple: mental health is health — we can’t improve one without the other. It is not an understatement to say that that first lecture years ago had me hooked and I have been on a journey to integrate mental health and physical health ever since. There is no longer a debate that the mind and body are connected, but we still have a long way to go to create a functioning healthcare system that allows for true integration. I am proud to be trying to move this needle with the work we are doing at Caraway, and as Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, I want to share some examples of what our integration looks like: 💜Our Director of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and eating disorder expert, Sara Levine, MD, MPH discusses diet culture and nutrition with our Caraway Crew, and consults with our therapists about eating-disordered behaviors in their patients.  💊Our Director of Women’s Health, Emily Birenbaum, MD talks with patients about what birth control options work best for their body and their moods, and never shies away from addressing news topics that leave women feeling confused about what information to trust.    🛟Our Lead Nurse Practitioner, Danielle Dexter MS, FNP-C, champions our Collaborative Care model and shares with other primary care clinicians how much her knowledge of mental health diagnoses and psychotropic prescribing helps her entire clinical practice.  ♻️Our Behavioral Health Director, Soomie Kim, asks about physical concerns with all her patients, often identifying symptoms like fatigue and migraines, and coordinates regular huddles with our medical clinicians to ensure we are addressing all aspects our patients’ health. 🌞Our Lead Psychologist and ADHD expert, Julia Baron, PsyD, works with patients to connect the dots between their struggles with focus and concentration and sleep, nutrition, exercise, and smartphone usage, then comes up with a treatment plan to help get them back on track. 🗺️Our Health Advisors, Savannah Becker and Laura Hollander, help our patients navigate our incredibly complex and stressful healthcare system and teach them invaluable health agency skills along the way. 💜And finally, our Head of Care Operations, Whitney Mirro, ensures Caraway is a supportive and enjoyable place for our clinicians to work, because to care well for patients you have to feel well-cared for yourself. Mental health shows up in so many different ways. It’s not confined to just one month of the year which is why we’re passionate about helping our patients see how it shows up in all areas of their lives and then working with them to find ways to feel better.

Primary care and mental health care should be integrated. Full stop. The collaborative care model, where primary care providers and behavioral health clinicians work together as one team, is foundational to Caraway. It creates better outcomes and makes early intervention possible. It’s not the way of the future; it’s the way of now. Speaking of the ease of referring his patients to mental healthcare services in this article, Dr. Wayne Altman says collaborative care feels “luxurious and indulgent,” but only because people are so accustomed to the scarcity of mental health resources. While collaborative care is part of Caraway’s secret sauce, we hope that one day it feels like a given in every health interaction. We look forward to the day when being cared for as a whole person, body and mind, feels commonplace and accessible to all. Link: https://lnkd.in/eu8Kf4PM

This year, National Women’s Health Week (which we think should be every week!) is dedicated to empowering women to take charge of their health journeys and highlighting health issues unique to women. We know a little something about this mission—because it’s the work we do every day. Here are a couple of the problems (❌) and Caraway’s solutions (✅): ❌Gen Z women’s reproductive health services are severely limited—they’re the first generation growing up with fewer reproductive rights than their mothers had. 19 million women live in contraceptive deserts, and 88% of women face at least one barrier to getting access to oral contraceptives. ✅ That’s why Caraway is providing non-judgemental, supportive, evidence-based reproductive healthcare services and making it easy for members to access birth control options, counseling, and prescriptions via our app. ❌Women are also disproportionately affected by other health conditions, including headache disorders, autoimmune disorders, and anxiety and depression, with these mental health concerns exacerbated by the lack of bodily autonomy and access to the sexual and reproductive health services they need. ✅ That’s why Caraway is meeting the unique needs of Gen Z women through a holistic approach that won’t judge them, make assumptions, or charge them an amount they’re unprepared for—all while addressing mental, physical, and reproductive health as intertwined aspects of their experience. Check out the link to learn more about #NWHW and how you can help this and every week. https://lnkd.in/e_hgQkd2

Hear from our Co-Founder and CEO about how Caraway enables our members to prioritize mental health #mentalhealthawarenessmonth

View profile for Lori Evans Bernstein, graphic

Advisor, Caraway; Fmr CEO & Co-founder

Working directly with Gen Z – whether on the Caraway team, as part of Caraway Crew, or with Caraway members – is always one of the best parts of my job, but this Mental Health Awareness month, I’m thinking about that honor more than ever. Gen Z has already proven their ability to lead us to a brighter, healthier future by understanding the importance of mental health, and reducing the stigma in addressing it. At Caraway, we’re lucky to follow their lead.  So this Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m proud to highlight the ways Caraway enables our members to prioritize mental health. Together, we hope to reshape the mental health landscape today and for generations to come:  🧠Mental health isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. By engaging in our mental health early on, we can foster resilience, learn healthy coping mechanisms, and pave the way for fulfilling lives. 📲Our digital-first care platform provides convenient access to licensed professionals, ensuring help is readily available whenever and wherever it's needed. But it's not only about access. By meeting our members where they are, we empower them to take control of their own mental well-being as they build independence. ♻️We respect the mind-body connection. Mental and physical health are inextricably linked. That’s why our collaborative Care Team treats them as one, helping members make connections to learn how their mental health impacts their physical health and vice versa. 💲We call on health payers to invest in proactive and integrated mental health care across adolescence and young adulthood. We must collectively look beyond near-term cost savings frameworks and instead improve reimbursement models to incentivize providers accordingly. Past approaches have resulted in current mental health networks that fall woefully short, creating a widespread access challenge and unmanageable out-of-pocket cost burden for patients in need. We can do so much better for Gen Z and generations to come! #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #womensmentalhealth #genz
