Former NFL player and Chicago Bears draft pick Chris Draft was at Carle Health Methodist Hospital this week to celebrate their work toward lung cancer screening and awareness. Increasing access to cancer screening, early detection and improved outcomes is central to work in oncology at Carle Health Methodist Hospital, the recipient a CHANGE grant through the NFL and the American Cancer Society’s Crucial Catch program to detect cancer early. This funding extends the organization’s commitment to supporting providers and technology that more accurately locate, stage and treat the disease through an integrated approach that fits each patient. Carle Health Greater Peoria provides free cancer screenings for community members at a special Cancer Screening Day once a year. The next free Cancer Screening Day will be Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Carle Health Pekin Hospital. Learn more about this event and others at carle.org/events. When elementary school principal Matt Andrews began experiencing late-term radiation treatment side effects as he battled back from brain cancer surgery, a tenacious medical team from the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Carle BroMenn Medical Center had his back when he needed it most. Allan File, MD, Hyperbaric Medicine, Wound Healing Center at Carle Foundation Hospital, got the ball rolling by suggesting hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) treatments as a therapy option. Then Debbie Wietfeldt, DNP, and her team at the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Carle BroMenn Medical Center advocated strongly for Andrews's initial HBOT treatments and again for a series of additional treatments after he. showed promising signs of recovery. “We have a lot of very determined people and we were all so passionate about Matt and his case,” Wietfeldt said. “That’s what I love about my job, we truly see the improvement with this treatment and will continue to advocate for it passionately for patients who are good candidates.” Andrews' story and recovery is shining example of what a determined care team patient, combined with groundbreaking treatment options, can accomplish.
