It's the final day of the Livable Cities Academy: Integrated Urban Flood Risk Management workshop. Officials from flood-affected cities across Africa are nearing the end of an intensive week working on challenges and solutions with experts from the City Resilience Program, The World Bank, Agence Française de Développement in Southern Africa and the City Climate Finance Gap Fund. On Wednesday delegates discussed the importance of good governance and stakeholder engagement, and during site visits they saw some of Cape Town’s flood mitigation schemes – Bayside Canal (pictured), Lourens River and Sir Lowry’s Pass River – up close, and in the company of those who built and maintain them. Yesterday, the focus shifted to the critical topics of mobilizing investment and ensuring sustainable financing for flood protection. Guided and supported by technical experts, each city prepared a pitch for a flood-resilience solution for their own cities to bring home. Today, delegates are presenting their best flood-resilience solutions in a ‘Dragon’s Den’-type competition. Their ideas will be tested by an expert panel of ‘dragons’ and a winner will be declared. More on this next week... After closing remarks from Peter Ellis, Romana Königsbrun, Rixa von Somnitz-Moreno, Gerhard Pienaar, Samuel LEFEVRE, and Ming Zhang delegates will have the opportunity to discuss future cooperation with the development partners present. As part of our #LivableCities Academy: Integrated Urban Flood Risk Management workshop, municipal officials from 18 cities across Africa visited #flooding and #stormwater management projects around the City of Cape Town. 🌍 These site visits provided a unique opportunity for our workshop participants to learn directly from Cape Town experts about their challenges and successes in flood adaptation and mitigation. They visited: 🌊 Bayside Canal: Enhancing flow capacity and water quality by lining canal slopes, installing floating litter booms, and constructing sedimentation ponds and treatment channels. 💦 Lourens River: Increasing capacity and rehabilitating 6 km of river with bulk earthworks, erosion protection, flood berms, and an upgraded stormwater pump station. 💧Sir Lowry’s Pass River: Upgrading 3 km of river to secure safe flood conveyance through bulk earthworks, erosion protection, engineered drop structures, and flood berms. Today is the first day of the Livable Cities Academy: Integrated Urban Flood Risk Management, a week-long workshop co-hosted by the City Resilience Program, whose aim is to equip African cities with the knowledge and skills to reduce flood risk.    Delegates from 18 cities across the continent are     🌊 learning about the key determinants of flood risk   🗺️ practicing creating maps showing risk exposure, and   📊 witnessing how flood risk data can lead to improved decision-making.     Tomorrow, participants will delve further into the options for mitigating and adapting to urban flood risk, and they will tackle the man-made phenomena that turn floods into disasters, answering questions such as: ♻️ How can you stop #solidwaste from blocking drains? 🏝️ How can effective coastal flood control be implemented? 🌱What are the opportunities for #naturebasedsolutions? Turning ideas into #urban #climate investments – how a partnership between the #GapFund and proactive local government and communities in Kinshasa led to results and future investments in targeted nature-based solutions.    The city of #Kinshasa, DRC, faces challenges including #urban heat, #flood risk, #soil erosion and #air pollution, as well as #urban poverty and unemployment.  Ongoing technical assistance from the #GapFund has supported local government leaders to work with local #communities to design and implement a targeted #nature-based solutions (NBS) strategy across the city. In the short-term, context-specific NBS implemented in pilot sites in Kinshasa include the planting of key species of plants, trees and shrubs and building terraces to reduce #vulnerability to floods, soil erosion, heatwaves and air pollution, and to sequester carbon, as well as urban farming to support local livelihoods. Looking ahead, Kinshasa’s NBS strategy has also identified a series of targeted local- and city-wide nature-based solutions worth an estimated US$153million. The strategy is also expected to inform talks on and mobilize additional finance for future urban investments financed by @The World Bank and other development partners. 🤝 🌍 The City Climate Finance Gap Fund and the C40 Cities Finance Facility are pleased to announce their strategic #partnership, allowing Gap Fund partner cities to access CFF’s proven #CapacityDevelopment tools and approaches to support project preparation and #AccessToFinance. Today we kick-off with our first joint workshop – the City Academy on Finance and Equity (CAFE) in Casablanca, Morocco. Over the next 4 days, city officials will learn useful concepts, concrete approaches and #tools to plan #sustainable and #equitable #infrastructure projects and transform cities’ innovative ideas into bold climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create resilient and liveable cities. The thematic workshop on #WasteManagement and #EnergyEfficiency welcomes more than 30 delegates from 9 cities, including Casablanca and Zenata (Morocco), Elbasan (Albania), La Marsa (Tunisia), Makindye (Uganda), Mansa (Zambia), Nikśič (Montenegro), Nyamira (Kenya) and Ojodu (Nigeria).   During the welcoming remarks, Ingrid Simon, CFF’s Programme Co-Director (C40) stressed the importance of moving forward together to achieve greater results.   The Gap Fund-CFF partnership also explores #matchmaking opportunities and provides the CFF with a potential pipeline of projects for late-stage support.   About the CFF: The C40 Cities Finance Facility is a project preparation facility that serves as a link between cities and finance to support a green and just transition. Planning, financing, and implementing #low-carbon slum upgrades: vital for #urban #climate #mitigation. Around 1 billion people living in slums globally face disproportionate #climate #impacts because they live in poor #housing in #disaster-prone locations, with inadequate #services. We know the role that slum #upgrading can play to support #climate #resilience in these #urban areas. Yet we know far less about how slum upgrading has a vital role to play in #supporting climate change #mitigation. The #Gap Fund is helping to bridge this knowledge gap. Slum areas often have a lower #carbon footprint than other #urban areas, namely because of how densely people live, often in precarious in insalubrious conditions and limited access to basic services. But #emissions from untreated wastewater and solid waste in these areas can be considerable. People in slums with poor #public #transport also often have to rely on vehicles that use #fossil fuels inefficiently. ‘Business as usual’ #slum upgrades run the risk of increasing #emissions. Using real-life examples of best practice, our #technical analysis on ‘Low-carbon slum upgrading’ shows how collaborative, #green approaches to construction, waste management, water and sanitation, energy, land use and transport #policy and #practice can support #climate mitigation, create #jobs and #transform lives. From formal #climate #finance mechanisms to sector-specific grants and subsidies, we outline some of the concrete steps needed to plan for and #implement #low-carbon #slum upgrading.
