CIS Mission The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS of North Carolina Established in 1989 CISNC is an independently incorporated not-for-profit directed by our own board of directors representing both private and public interests in the state. CISNC assists North Carolina communities in replicating the CIS process of coordinated service delivery, supports the thirty-one local CIS organizations across the state, and advocates for children, youth, and their families. CISNC provides regional and on-site training and technical assistance, builds partnerships with state agencies and organizations to benefit young people, and serves as a resource and information center for local communities concerned about youth at risk of school failure. Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest stay-in school network, serving just over one million youth in 154 communities across the United States. CIS is providing the link between teachers and the community – by bringing caring adults into the schools and community sites to meet children’s needs. This link gives children the much-needed opportunity to focus on learning and their future. CIS National assists CISNC with training, technical assistance and network opportunities.

As schools across North Carolina grapple with academic recovery post-pandemic, one alarming trend continues to plague districts large and small: chronic absenteeism. Defined as missing 10% or more of school days in a year, nearly one-third (27%) of North Carolina’s students are considered chronically absent... ...Research shows that being present matters. The earlier chronic absenteeism is addressed, the better the outcomes for students. What is needed is a support system that recognizes the barriers many students face and works to remove them... ...Community organizations such as Communities In Schools of North Carolina play a vital role in providing in-school services and programs, mentorship, and other supports that keep students engaged... Thank you so much to everyone who attended this year's Back to School Bash! Last night, we had over 200 in attendance at the world-famous Angus Barn celebrating what it means to go All In for the students we support in North Carolina. Our Alumni Student Speakers Maria and Ilianamaria shared moving stories of impact, and we honored longtime board member Mr. James H. Speed Jr., with the H. Glenn Williams Power of One Award. A big THANK YOU to all of this year's Sponsors! This night would not have been possible without your continued support and confidence in our mission of surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We will be sharing pictures soon!
The “longest roll call” raises awareness for the 15 million students who are chronically absent (missing 10% or more of the school year) in the U.S. Their reasons why are very real. CISNC knows that the presence of a Student Support Specialist (SSS's) can change everything. SSS's work one-on-one with students to ensure they have what they need to engage in learning, connecting students to the resources they need to show up to school prepared and ready to learn. Visit our website to learn how we’re showing up and ensuring ALL students have the support they need to #BePresent in school and realize their full potential! #BeingPresentMatters
We are excited to see everyone tonight at the Back to School Bash, honoring longtime board member Mr. James H. What a moment! 🤩 Today, we kicked off our Leadership Town Hall conference with the unveiling of our new campaign billboard to bring attention to chronic absenteeism – an issue that affects 15 million kids nationwide. At CIS, we tackle chronic absenteeism by putting site coordinators like Marco (right) in schools to help connect students like Estéban (left) with the resources they need to show up, ready to learn! Thank you to the city of Dallas, to those involved in the campaign, and all who joined us for this very special moment! 🎉 #BeingPresentMatters

CISNC is putting chronic absence front and center. Working with students, families, and schools to ensure students are present, because being present in schools, for kids matters. 27% chronic absence rate can’t be the story for our NC students. Communities In Schools of North Carolina #allinforkids
