Last week, the Conifer team attended the New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) annual Upstate New York Affordable Housing Conference. Conifer’s industry experts, Muammar Hermanstyne and Peter Wysocki shared their insights on affordable housing through panel discussions. The team networked with others and engaged with current industry professionals. On August 23rd Executive Vice President of Development + Acquisitions, Lisa Kaseman met with NYSAFAH members, Vice Chair of the Ways, Means Committee Community Development Tax Team and New York’s Representative Claudia Teeney. The group discussed the critical need for affordable housing developments in local communities and emphasized the importance of increasing the allocation of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) to meet the unprecedented demand. During the meeting, Lisa passionately advocated for the urgent need to expand affordable housing in our communities. The recent Back to School Night at Copiague Commons was a heartwarming celebration of community spirit, bringing together families and neighbors in a shared moment of support. Led by our dedicated Copiague Commons Community Manager, Jessica, the event was a vibrant reminder of the strength and resilience found within our community. Understanding the stress that back-to-school shopping can bring, Jessica took it upon herself to organize a bake sale, with all proceeds going towards providing school supplies for the children of Copiague Commons. "The reason why I feel these events are so important is that sometimes it takes one gesture to change a person's whole attitude," Jessica shared. "These people have gone and continue to go through so much in life that one ounce of happiness counts." The evening was filled with excitement as tables overflowed with school supplies, while kids enjoyed face painting and cotton candy. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy as everyone gathered to celebrate the new school year. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 44 million people in the United States live in food-insecure households. With September being Hunger Action Month, it is important to recognize this devastating number and support the organizations and industries that are taking action to fight hunger. Affordable housing organizations like Conifer aim to alleviate families from food insecurity by providing safe, healthy homes, removing the impossible ultimatum that those living in poverty face: Housing or food? With quality housing taken care of, residents can allocate their financial resources to essential needs, meaning they have additional resources to obtain food for themselves and their families. This exciting project, located off Mecklenburg Road, aims to transform the area into a thriving, mixed-use community.
