𝐃𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐓 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 – 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐎 𝐃𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐋𝐎𝐏𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐘 Phenomenal day at BattleLab, Dorset Innovation Park celebrating the numerous cutting-edge technical developments being made in the county and the Great South West, and sharing with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The event was preceded by a very relaxing drive through the gorgeous #Dorset countryside, which influences the erroneous view that the country is beaches and farming, and doesn’t recognise the incredible #Technology and #Engineering hub that it is. Many thanks to Dorset Council UK and Digital Dorset for inviting me to talk about solving the #SkillsGap by investing in publicity, #education and #STEM / #STEAM support from the earliest years. Having the honour in being part of the #DigitalSkillsPartnership, I feel more confident that we are putting together a strategy locally that will start to address a key failure in preparing the UK for a more prosperous and technically leading future. After Gary Littledyke set the scene, Council leader Nick Ireland gave a very open and honest summary of the reginal situation and the hopes and plans to address. Colin Wood then started to present the great innovations, not least James Thomas and JET Connectivity’s development of marine and aerial networks. On a similar theme James Price continued talking about rural connectivity solutions through the #DONE project, leading to Chris Goodyer from Arm explain their low energy architecture versus other chip designers/manufacturers. We had a great chat later about the BBC Micro. This led on to a number of short presentations about pulling this together to enable low cost/low energy wireless networking opportunities from Ross, Mohit and Brian. In parallel, Hector Gibson Fleming flemming of Wessex Internet (regular visitor to my village) talked about their revolutionary approach to bringing #broadband to rural settings, followed by Ste Ashton’s sharing of the related projects with Worcestershire County Council. Tim Robertson introduced Ben Timmons of Qualcomm and the support of Jake Gibson Shaw-Sutton Of #Robotriks ragwort finding and picking device. Colin Wood returned to talk more about the park and introduce Andrew and Greg to focus on the #defence related innovations that are supported. Past met future with wifi installation throughout the Swanage Railway Co. Ltd. with Peter Milford, and Bethan Evans and Laura Hawkings from Excelerate Technology Group. Rebecca Davies and myself closed the presentations with talks on skills, opportunities and plans before a “fireside" chat with Deputy Leader Richard Biggs and employment project leader Janek Tarnawski. The day ended with a Q&A with a few of us answering questions about AI (of course), leadership, and how we envisaged being able to drive progress effectively. The future’s bright The future’s Dorset Many thanks to Penny Syddall, Gordon Fong and others
