According to the National Weather Service, dozens of people are killed and hundreds more are injured each year by lightning, with most incidents occurring in June, July, and August. MasTec Power Delivery takes lightning seriously. When lightning is determined to be within eight miles or closer from an outdoor work location, we cease all overhead and underground electrical work. Take steps to protect yourself and your home from lightning: - Seek shelter. Go inside when you observe thunder or lightning. - Avoid sinks, faucets, and baths. - Stay off porches and away from windows and doors. - Consider surge protectors for your electronic devices and appliances. - If you are outside, stay away from tall objects, trees, and bodies of water. Heat-related illnesses can be severe, but they can be prevented. Be sure to hydrate before, during, and after working. Every 20 minutes, drink 1 cup of cool water, even if you aren’t thirsty. When performing longer jobs in hot weather, drinks with electrolytes are best to consume. Avoid alcohol and energy drinks, and be sure to take rest breaks in shady or cool areas to allow your body to recover.
