🌿 Biodiversity has been a cornerstone of the EU legislative agenda. However, powerful lobbies are now trying to portray it as an obstacle to food and energy security. 🛑 ⏸ Calls for a 'pause' in environmental action risk pushing nature and our economies to the brink. We urge EU leaders to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution by strengthening the European Green Deal for a Nature-Positive Europe by 2030. 🌍💚 These are the proposals from the European Habitats Forum to make nature great again 📄👇 #RestoreNature #GreenDeal #Biodiversity

*𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗟 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦* 🚨 Last week, several major European NGOs applied to officially join the landmark 'End the Cage Age' legal case brought against the European Commission, and now being considered by the Court of Justice of the European Union ⚖ In 2021, following the #EndTheCageAge campaign and the related European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) (that collected over 1.4 million signatures), the Commission made an explicit commitment to ban cage farming in the EU, with action promised before the end of 2023 (the only ECI in history leading to concrete commitments). Yet still we see no action... The European Commission must keep its promise and ban the use of cages. Watch this space... Curious to read more? Denmark's proposed tax on agricultural emissions is a global first and a big step in the right direction 👏 but it's no silver bullet ⚠️ Writing in Social Europe, our own Mathieu Mal explains the positives and pitfalls of Denmark’s plans, the potential of emissions-pricing systems, and why this is no time for complacency https://lnkd.in/esX-qn_S #RestoreNature #ClimateCrisis #Agriculture #EmissionsTax #EmissionPricingSystem #Denmark #SocialEurope #OpinionPiece

🇪🇺 Hungary has officially taken over the Presidency of the European Union, replacing Belgium at the steering wheel. 🌿 Many advances were made by the Spanish and Belgian presidencies, both of which also promoted debate and reflections on a range of key priorities, with climate mitigation, just transition, circular economy, and climate adaptation and resilience the priorities of the outgoing Presidency. Hungary now has the responsibility to ensure a constructive legacy for the Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian Presidency Trio: 🌍 Combining green and social dimensions remains key to fighting the climate, nature, and pollution crises and achieving a one-planet economy. 📢 The science is clear: carbon offsetting is not a reliable tool for tackling the climate crisis. In fact, studies have repeatedly shown that offsetting has often failed to deliver additional emissions reductions. Today, 80+ civil society organisations are calling on carbon accounting and climate target setting bodies, including Science Based Targets initiative, to stick to science. ⏰ A moment of truth: ⌛ In two days (30 June) all EU countries are due to submit their National Energy and Climate Plans #NECPs. Despite the fact that these plans are crucial for meeting 2030 climate goals and ensuring a socially just transition, it still looks like many countries will miss the deadline… 🧐 The first drafts fell short of putting most countries on course for these targets. The revised plans will face another round of scrutiny and we urge the European Commission to maintain rigorous standards: Urgent, concrete action on renewables and energy demand is necessary to displace fossil fuels so these plans MUST be up to the task. 🙋♀️ Ensuring the public - in particular, youth and marginalised groups - are properly involved would be a good way of ensuring robust plans that can deliver for a liveable future for all. #TogetherFor1point5

🇪🇺🤝🇺🇦 This week, the European Union and Ukraine officially launched membership talks. Our President, Toni Vidan, traveled to Ukraine on a solidarity visit to meet with our members in the country. During his visit, he highlighted the key role of Ukrainian civil society groups in advancing environmental policies and green reconstruction. As accession negotiations begin, we encourage the EU to take the necessary steps for a relationship founded on sustainability and a commitment to environmental protection. In our European Pact for the Future, we have outlined key measures to implement a green and just transition in candidate countries: 🟢 Promote Fossil Fuel Independence 🟢 Ensure Decent Work 🟢 Provide Legal, Financial, and Administrative Support 🟢 Reform EU Governance ✍️ Read, share, and sign our proposal for a Pact for the Future: https://lnkd.in/dxyY76uH

The Court of Justice of the European Union said STOP to unchecked pollution at the EU’s largest steel plant in Taranto! Based on the EU Industrial Emissions Directive, the Court backed people demanding a halt to industrial activities that harm human health. The uncontrolled industrial pollution from the steel plant in Italian town of Taranto has been making local residents, including children, sick. As concerned citizens sought to stop the plant’s harmful activities, a critical question emerged: does compliance with EU industrial emissions rules include not causing harm to human health? The European Court of Justice has now provided a definitive answer: it absolutely does! This ruling is a significant victory for all who have been fighting to reduce emissions to safe levels, protecting both people and the planet. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/dcuZ4jRu
