⏰ A moment of truth: ⌛ In two days (30 June) all EU countries are due to submit their National Energy and Climate Plans #NECPs. Despite the fact that these plans are crucial for meeting 2030 climate goals and ensuring a socially just transition, it still looks like many countries will miss the deadline… 🧐 The first drafts fell short of putting most countries on course for these targets. The revised plans will face another round of scrutiny and we urge the European Commission to maintain rigorous standards: Urgent, concrete action on renewables and energy demand is necessary to displace fossil fuels so these plans MUST be up to the task. 🙋♀️ Ensuring the public - in particular, youth and marginalised groups - are properly involved would be a good way of ensuring robust plans that can deliver for a liveable future for all. #TogetherFor1point5

🌍🔍 Have you already read our National Energy and Climate Plan study? This comprehensive document represents the final report of the independent external study on the role of European Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) in energy and climate policies.🏙️ European Energy and Climate policy aims for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action is a key mechanism for coordinating the EU’s energy policies.🌿 🌍 No country will achieve its targets without the contribution of LRGs. Cities are responsible for over 70% of global human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and are on the front lines of climate change impacts. However, they also serve as hubs for innovative solutions to tackle climate change and its effects, such as energy communities. 🔗 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eQtVuX_z #ClimateAction #EnergyPolicy #LocalGovernments #Sustainability #ClimateNeutral #InnovativeSolutions #NECPStudy

Europe needs €800bn to meet 2030 climate targets, and a total of €2.5tn to complete the green transition by 2050, new EU report says. Between 2010 and 2018 total investments in power grids in EU reached some €32bn... if financing continues at that rate until 2050 there would be a 60% funding gap to what is required. Walk the talk. #esg #netzerotransition #transitionplan

#NEWsPoland 📙🔗The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment has submitted a preliminary version of the "National Energy and Climate Plan to 2030" update to the European Commission. The document presents the first of two required analytical scenarios, i.e. the baseline scenario (WEM, with existing measures). 🇵🇱This scenario reproduces the current assessment of Poland's possible contribution to the EU climate and energy targets for 2030. The trajectory enabling Poland to achieve a GHG emission reduction target close to the EU level (i.e. 55%) will be presented in a more ambitious transition scenario (WAM, with additional measures), which is being advanced at the Ministry of Climate and Environment. 🇵🇱The target document, which includes two scenarios: a baseline (WEM) and an ambitious one (WAM), will be submitted for full public consultation and sector consultation and then finalized in late Q2/early Q3 2024. ▶️https://lnkd.in/di34ACcv

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its annual report today, in which the head of the organisation made the damning claim that countries that water down climate policies risks worsening the climate crisis, as well as damaging their own economies. The report itself calls on governments around the world not to stall progress by weakening climate measures, warning that the effects we’ve been increasingly seeing, such as wildfires and flooding, will affect us all. We know that the transition to clean energy has never been more urgent, and global leaders need to make, and stick to, ambitious commitments to tackle the climate crisis. That’s why in July, along with Friends of the Earth and Good Law Project we announced that we’re taking action against the UK government for the second time, over its high risk and inadequate climate plans. What’s at stake in the next general election for UK climate policy? Listen to Jason Mitchell discuss with Rt. Hon. Chris Skidmore MP, former Minister and Chair of the UK Net Zero Review, about why it’s critical that the UK maintain its international climate leadership; what should the UK do about domestic oil and gas production in another energy security crisis; and how the UK can respond to the US and EU clean energy stimulus programmes. #netzero

With the clock ticking down on the 2025 deadline for #G7 countries to end inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, ministers at the Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment fell short when it comes to breaking 15 years of gridlock. The Ministerial had potential to be a success in tackling some low-hanging fruit on the climate change mitigation front—in particular, ending governments’ subsidies to fossil fuels that amounted to at least USD 1.5 trillion globally and USD 199 billion in the G7 countries in 2022. But eliminating support by 2025 now appears a distant possibility. As the deadline looms, Jonas Kuehl, Megan Darby and Ivetta Gerasimchuk look ahead to the task at hand for next year's Canadian presidency.

🔉The overhaul of Member States’ National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) will play a pivotal role in accelerating the EU’s progress towards achieving its hugely ambitious targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% until 2030. 🔉In this broader context of rethinking the European economic development approach, the low-carbon transition of the Bulgarian economy remains a substantial challenge that successive governments have largely neglected. 🔉The report #Exiting the #Vicious #Cycle aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current policy framework for decarbonisation in Bulgaria, viewed through the lens of the draft revised NECP and its alignment with Europe’s ambitious climate objectives. The $9tn Question: How to Finance the Green Transition 🌍💰 The stakes are sky-high. To curb average global temperature increases in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement, climate finance needs a massive boost—escalating to about $9tn annually by 2030, a steep rise from the $1.3tn reported in 2021-22 Climate Policy Initiative. The urgency has only intensified since nearly 200 countries committed last year to phase out fossil fuels by 2050. Alongside this, they agreed to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Agency forecasts that the public sector must contribute approximately 30% of the necessary global climate finance, with the remaining 70% expected from the private sector. What's Next for the #GreenTransition? 🌱🔋 Could the future lie in smarter regulations, increased public-private partnerships, or expanded concessional finance? Share your thoughts below—I’m eager to hear your insights! 🗨️👇Financial Times

In recent discussions, the failure of the German government to properly communicate the realities of the energyg transition have been brought up. - Why did Minister Habeck and his communication team allow the opposition to capture the narrative? - Why were all these wrong statements not corrected? - There was never a ban. - Nobody would come to your house and rip out your gas boiler. - There were so many excemptions for people deeply affected by the law and the subsidy scheme was and is actually quite generous. I can not answer, why the ministry did not activate its own communication experts more, but the whole situation reminded me of Per Grankvist, according to this Bloomberg article "Chief storyteller of Swedens Viable cities program". Maybe we need an EU chief storyteller, Ursula von der Leyen, to explain to the broader public that the energy transition in heating is a positive thing and to communicate the realities of day-to-day living in a carbon-neutral world. The energy transition can be shaped into a positive narrative. It should be recognized as policy action that shows that the EU cares and aims to help remove Europes' dependancy on fossil gas, replacing it with technologies that use local and renewable energy ... maybe. https://lnkd.in/dukc9FN8
