🇪🇺🤝🇺🇦 This week, the European Union and Ukraine officially launched membership talks. Our President, Toni Vidan, traveled to Ukraine on a solidarity visit to meet with our members in the country. During his visit, he highlighted the key role of Ukrainian civil society groups in advancing environmental policies and green reconstruction. As accession negotiations begin, we encourage the EU to take the necessary steps for a relationship founded on sustainability and a commitment to environmental protection. In our European Pact for the Future, we have outlined key measures to implement a green and just transition in candidate countries: 🟢 Promote Fossil Fuel Independence 🟢 Ensure Decent Work 🟢 Provide Legal, Financial, and Administrative Support 🟢 Reform EU Governance ✍️ Read, share, and sign our proposal for a Pact for the Future: https://lnkd.in/dxyY76uH

European Parliament debate ❗️The world is changed 🇪🇺The Symposium on “EU Treaties – Why they need targeted changes” in Europe Parliament. 🎤The debate about EU Treaty changes is back. War in Ukraine, geopolitical rivalry, climate emergency, the rising cost of living, pandemic experience, tensions about migration, misinformation disturbing the democratic debate and a new enlargement in preparation. The need for stronger European capacity to act is obvious on all these fronts. The time has come to reassess it and identify some targeted changes. The European Parliament is about to vote on a key report of this legislature, calling for a European Convention to work on the update of the European Treaties.

📨 Together with other civil society organisations, we’ve sent an open letter to the Ukraine Facility’s trialogue negotiators calling for an inclusive, sustainable and environmentally sound reconstruction of #Ukraine! 💸 The Ukraine Facility is a EUR 50 billion reconstruction fund for Ukraine. The EU regulation that will determine how the fund operates is due to be voted on by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in February. Ahead of the decision to adopt the regulation, we urge the negotiators to maintain and, where possible, strengthen amendments on: 🤝 the transparent and meaningful participation of civil society in processes related to Ukraine’s reconstruction; 🌳 environmental safeguards and principles. The Ukraine Facility Regulation is crucial if Ukraine is to recover from the devastating effects of the war. Let’s make sure it’s rooted in green and inclusive principles! “When we speak about alternatives to enlargement, it essentially means doing nothing about the gray zones which Russia will continue trying to manipulate. It also means doing nothing about the fact that Europe will lose its role as a geopolitical player as soon as it stops being dynamic.” Maria Golubeva, Head of the Board, Baltic Initiative on European Reform, discusses the EU Enlargement 🇪🇺 with Rosa Balfour, Director at Carnegie Europe, and Dominik Tarczynski, Member of the Law and Justice Party in Poland at the Newsmakers. 🌐 #Newsmakers #EUEnlargement #EuropeanIntegration #BalticInitiative #Reform #Geopolitics #BalticEUReform https://lnkd.in/dAfP2Qg4

On this day 30 years ago, the European Union came into existence as a result of the Maastricht Treaty. The political union of Europe was a long-term idea that became possible only with the reunification of Germany and the new impetus toward integration of economic, social, and environmental policies among the founding members. From a diplomatic point of view, the agreement at the base of the European Union can be considered a masterpiece and a case study of political negotiation.

Tired of your job in an NGO? Feel burned out? Look at Ukraine, where environmental NGOs have not tempered their activities since the start of the war, but rather the opposite! There is now a need to document the consequences of combat, implement reforms, and create conditions for sustainable, nature-friendly, green recovery. And we must bear in mind that environmental safety is part of national security. So even during wartime, Ukraine’s green movements continue to keep environmental issues relevant: - Grassroots organizations are developing methodologies to document environmental damage caused by military actions. - Ukrainian Human rights organizations continue to monitor government procurements, projects, as well as the implementation of new regulatory acts impacting natural resources. Viktoria Hubareva, a Kyiv-based journalist and environmentalist, in her article shows that Ukrainian environmentalists have their hands full: https://lnkd.in/ezWtTDaP
