On today's episode of “Food Talk with Dani Nierenberg,” I sit down with Marion Nestle and Dariush Mozaffarian. We dive into how effectively the U.S. healthcare system can help us address food and nutrition security through Food is Medicine programs, the politicization of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the latest class of weight-loss drugs known as GLP-1s. Today is #WorldFoodDay and a reminder that everyone deserves affordable access to healthy, nutrient-rich, safe, and delicious food. And to make this happen, we need to diversify our food and agriculture systems We are in Toronto, Canada with the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph and FAO to discuss best practices and replicatable solutions. See Danielle Nierenberg's new column in Forbes showcasing some of the ideas being presented: https://lnkd.in/erkdiMH8. #WorldFoodDay2024

Moreover, farmers—small, medium, and large—literally need a seat at the table, from in person input at international dialogues like COP29, the U.N. Climate Change Conference, to co-creating technologies with scientists and entrepreneurs that will actually solve the problems that farmers are experiencing in fields and ranches. Still. Passionate. About. People

Time to reflect can be difficult to come by but I've promised myself to try to do so more frequently and closer to key events. Reflecting on impactful NYC Climate Week moments, I consider that when two out of four panelists say, "I don't know why they invited me", that it suggests the organizing committee has been true to the subject matter! Kudos to Food Tank for assembling relevant voices whom I believed just happened to be diverse. I've seen a lot of panels with "samey" voices - deserving to be at the table, but you want to get as close to 360 degrees for any type of healthy and wholesome discussion. The Monday session was a non-stop marathon, delivered to satisfy the online audience while making it tricky for the in-person audience to choose when to take a break! This panel had a mix of food policy professionals and urban farmers/ food activists. They had the job of discussing the state of and link between Food Security, Food Justice and Food Sovereignty - and it ended with the panelists saying that "we need to talk after this panel..." I had to step out before this panel but then re-entered the room to hear what I knew instinctively to be the revolutionary tones of a Jamaican accent in a corporate space. Those who know, know! Allow me to lean into my bias to spotlight Sheryll Durrant who when asked her first question, responded with: "I don't want to answer that question..." and with fire she continued to give voice to truths that make fingers snap while burning the soul. "My organization gives food away for free but we need to pay our farmers! We have farmers on SNAP benefits! Too many of our farmers can't afford to eat the food they grow; and too many are without health insurance in the richest country in the world. Shame!" More shameful than my blurry photo - but it's about them, not me! It was great to hear from Qiana Mickie, Exec Director of NYC Mayor's office of Urban Agriculture. This office has only been open for two years but is a significant signal of the intent and direction of the city. The learnings from Tony Hillery, founder and CEO at Harlem Grown. No need to try to imagine what's possible when you provide access to healthy foods in so-called food deserts - just ask Tony. He runs 14 urban farms, gives away free produce locally grown, and through his education program has supported 22 children into university. It doesn't stop there. Tony pays all his workers a family sustaining wage, 401k, and healthcare benefits. It can be done! The question is do we want to do it!? Finally, Ora Kemp, MPH, not pictured 🙏 powerfully made the point that dollars eventually follow policy, highlighting that Maine is the only state to enshrine the "right to food" in policy. We should not only celebrate this human right upheld but illuminate such examples with a view to apply pressure for policies like these to be commonplace in every State. #FoodSovereignty #FoodSecurity #FoodJustice Guckenheimer #ClimateWeek #GrowthMindset

My first dedicated #climateweek in NYC since leaving over a year ago. It was very worthwhile. Both Jason Buechel and Jean-Christophe Flatin spoke to the Food Tank mission brand summit about subjects close to the heart of STRONG ROOTS and many other challenger brands also. Moderated and hosted by the impressive Danielle Nierenberg I also got to hear from Tony's Chocolonely and Vital Farms leadership which will be helpful on our journey. Looking forward to next year already with actionable steps in the mean time. #climateweek #foodtank #UNGA Photo credits: Ryan Rose
