Last night, I cried reading an email. A generalist in our community just landed a nearly $200K role that "didn't exist" three months ago. Not because she gained new skills. Not because she got another certification. But because she finally stopped apologizing for being "too scattered." I've spent years watching brilliant people play small because someone once told them to "pick a lane." The most heartbreaking part? They're leaving $100K+ on the table. Every. Single. Year. That's why we built Unboxed. It's not another course. It's permission to be brilliantly, unapologetically broad. (And get paid accordingly.) 👉 Join the Unboxed waitlist: https://lnkd.in/gT-4jVff

"Too all over the place" was the feedback she got for years. Until last week. When a Generalist World 🌀 member landed their dream role. A freelance marketing specialist position in an academic health system's psychiatry department. Why'd they pick her? Because she could translate complex health concepts into compelling stories that connected with real people. (That's what happens when you stop apologizing for your range and start positioning it.) Here's what they really mean: "Too broad" = Strategically diverse You solve problems from multiple angles while others stay in one lane. "Unfocused" = Intentionally adaptable You learn at light speed because you've done it before. "All over the place" = Future-ready You're built for a world that needs people who connect anything to everything. Stop apologizing for your scope. Start making them pay for it. Unboxed launches November 21st for $349 🎁 Join the waitlist here: https://lnkd.in/gT-4jVff

I wanted to ask a question that (frankly) nobody had bothered to ask before: What's it *really* like being a generalist in the modern workplace? 589 generalists responded, and the patterns that emerged, are…loud. Asking this question was overdue, and very important (I'm sorry it took me so long!!) I've broken down the findings into a report. The report explores: - findings from our ‘understanding generalist survey’ - stories & patterns of generalists in the workplace - questioning if our current hiring system is setting generalists up for failure I want to be transparent—this is not a rigorous research study. It's a starting point, laying the groundwork for more work to be done. It does however, tell the stories of how people with non-linear paths *feel*. It is a collection of lived experiences. It's for every person who's felt that pit in their belly when someone asks 'so, what do you do?' It’s step 1 (of many) to bringing systemic change in our workplaces; and to advocate for, & recognise, generalist pathways. Because it's time to connect the dots between generalists and organisations. You see in 2022, Generalist World 🌀 started with a (literal) handful of people like Lucy, Aisling, Sakshi, Adam and Elyse asking the questions: - are we alone in this? - where do people like us belong? Today, that network has grown to over 75,000 professionals (🤯) It seems, generalists, that lonely feeling of being alone your career? That quiet sense that you don't fit? You're not alone. This report is your validation. Your mirror. Your call to action. If it sparks something in you, please support us by sharing this on your socials, in your communities, within your circles. Generalist World 🌀 exists because people like you share it. I appreciate your support very much! Now, let’s change the world 🌀 🤓 Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eGhj75YN ♻️ share this to reach new corners of LinkedIn #generalist #getunboxed 👏 credits: edits by: Lindsey Nikita design by: Ece Canva published on: beehiiv graphics by: Napkin AI

Somethings broken. Generalist World 🌀 surveyed 589 high-performing generalists and the results WERE LOUD.... - 84% of top generalists get filtered out by traditional hiring - 35% auto-rejected by ATS systems - 72% called both "overqualified AND underqualified" Somethings broken, obviously. Every day, your ATS is auto-rejecting the *exact people* who could transform your org. Why? Because they don't fit in a neat little specialised box. Sure, this makes things like org charts nice and tidy. .....But what's the real cost? When companies hire generalists they're proven to: - spot expensive problems before they explode - connect teams that can't speak to each other - turn business blindspots into opportunities - save initiatives others can't crack I'm putting the finishing touches on a report that compiles insights from our survey: The Million $$ Blindspot It's your guide to hiring (and keeping) generalist talent in 2025. Get it free: generalist.world 🌀 (dropping in 3hours!) ♻️ repost if you think this is a message worth sharing ✍️ comment with the stat that resonated the most with you credits: carousel designed by: Ece + Canva survey created by: Lindsey Nikita published on: beehiiv #generalist #getunboxed

💡Head of Partnerships @ the London Interdisciplinary School | 🌀 XIR @ Generalist World | 🖋️ Writer @ Future Histories

When you pitch yourself, you make people uncomfortable. Trust me, I've been there. The “oh so I started my career here and then I kind of squiggled over there and then suddenly I found myself 5 miles in the other direction…” soliloquy is all too familiar to me 😅 Can we blame these poor souls who listen oh-so-politely and blink encouragingly as their minds start making dinner plans? No. We need to make our messaging stick. While most of us lead with a chronological history of all the roles we’ve had, I’ve learnt that doesn’t cut it when you have a non-traditional path. If you’ve zigged, zagged, squiggled or spiked, you need to tell your story differently. And the more I’ve developed my red thread story, the more certain I’ve become of one thing. My range is my greatest asset. This evening at 7pm GMT, Lindsey and I are hosting a free session with Generalist World 🌀 as part of Butter 🧈's ‘Seen in Scenes’–an epic 24-hour workshop marathon to celebrate the launch of their brand new product (s/o Cheska and the rest of the team - it is truly AWESOME). We’ll teach you how to: 1️⃣ Identify your unique skill stack 2️⃣ Mould your squiggly story into a compelling one-liner 3️⃣ Turn your generalist superpower into market opportunities Our promise? You'll walk away with a clear framework to position and monetise your unique stack of skills (instead of breaking out in sweats whenever anyone asks “So, what do you do?”). Tempting, I know. Leave a 🌀 in the comments and I'll share the link to join!
