About us

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in the area that is today South Sudan since the 1970s, on a periodic basis. GIZ’s coordination office has been located in the capital, Juba, since 2010. GIZ works on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the following three priority areas: Food and nutrition security and rural development Urban water supply and sanitation Rural development and good governance. In the field of food and nutrition security, GIZ and its partners are working to combat undernourishment and malnutrition among children and women and raising awareness for health issues. The German Government is supporting local water utilities in four towns and cities in ensuring public drinking water supplies and sanitation, while making these services affordable and accessible even for low-income groups. GIZ is involved in developing water companies and is training staff to operate the plants. To improve hygienic conditions in schools, sanitary facilities are being extended and schoolchildren made aware of the importance of hygiene. To develop rural regions in the long term, GIZ is advising and supporting selected rural districts, allowing them to deliver services in a more direct and needs-based manner. The capacities of the rural authorities are being developed, while the population (especially women) are being encouraged to get involved in planning and shaping their immediate environments. The German Federal Foreign Office is also supporting the implementation of the 2015 peace deal through GIZ. 📣Empowering African Agriculture: GIZ Staff Meet in Egypt for SNRD Africa Conference The Sector Network Rural Development Africa Agribusiness & Agricultural Policy conference took place in Cairo this year, marking the first time for Egypt to host this significant event. Over 65 GIZ professionals representing 23 African nations, alongside delegates from the GIZ Head Quarter Office, convened to strengthen collaboration within African agriculture through comprehensive partnerships, networking, knowledge exchange, and collective innovation. SNRD Africa stands as a network of GIZ experts dedicated to rural development across the continent, with a focus on areas such as policy formulation, climate resilience, digital transformation, women's economic empowerment, food security, and agribusiness. The inaugural session featured insights from Ms. May Khairy, Executive Director of the Food Export Council, Mr. Andreas Ruepp, Cluster Coordinator for Private Sector Development at GIZ Egypt, and Dr. Heike Hoeffler, Speaker of the Sector Network Rural Development (SNRD) Africa. Throughout the event, key stakeholders from Egypt's agricultural landscape participated actively, representing entities such as the Agricultural Export Council - AEC, the Food Export Council (FEC), private enterprises, and the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The concluding segments witnessed the formulation of strategic outcomes by working groups, setting the groundwork for future collaborations. These outcomes encompass new paths for international cooperation, integrated solutions for partnership management, and the cultivation of alliances. Discussions also delved into systematic portfolio management methodologies and the enhancement of Sector Networks' future, emphasising synergies between sector projects and global/bilateral initiatives. Additionally, valuable insights from Egypt's portfolio were shared, illustrating their adaptability to projects across Africa. This solid foundation lays the groundwork for further advancements at next year's conference in Lusaka, Zambia. Follow this link for more information on SNRD Africa https://lnkd.in/dFHaf_Gi

In Yambio, Western Equatoria State, we participated in the 🌍#WorldFoodDay 🍽️ celebration with partners, project participants and local authorities. The celebration hosted by the state Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environment, the state Ministry of Cooperative and Rural Development and the state Ministry of Animal Resources, Fishery and Tourism together with the Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster included an appreciation of smallholder farmers and their contributions to food security as well as discussions around resilience, community support, the policy environment and networking possibilities for young agricultural professionals. While #WorldFoodDay reminds us that there is still a long way to go to achieve #SDG2, it also is an opportunity to celebrate our successes in addressing food insecurity and malnutrition and ensuring the #RightToFoods for all.🌽🤝 #SustainableFood #FoodSecurity #FoodForAll #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

Joining the world in celebrating today’s 🌍#WorldFoodDay 🍽️, we also celebrate our team, implementing partners and, most importantly, the South Sudanese small-holder farmers 👩🏿🌾 that have constantly worked and are still working towards ensuring food security in all dimensions. At GIZ South Sudan, we aim at not just increasing #FoodAvailibilty, #FoodAccessibility but also #FoodStability and #FoodUtilization with the use of holistic approaches. All in all, our projects contribute to increasing the production of food, strengthening alternative sources of income and building capacities of extension workers, small-holder farmers and agricultural students while managing natural resources and disaster risks as well as collaboration with stakeholders. We’re committed to continue supporting small-holder households and farmers to achieve their #RightToFoods.🌽🤝 #FoodSecurity #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

💡Did you know that the right to foods goes beyond the production and consumption of food? At GIZ South Sudan, we strive to ensure that every dimension of right to foods is achieved. One way of doing this is by strengthening the small-holder farmers’ knowledge and skills on AgriBusiness at the Crop Training Center in Yei.🎓 #AgriBusiness remains an integral part of the sustainable food system! In the courses on agriculture at the Crop Training Center in Yei, students learn about business oriented farming and entrepreneurship. Improved capacity and knowledge in AgriBusiness helps farmers to better access markets and food supply chains, thereby improving the agricultural value chain.💵🌽 #RightToFoods #WorldFoodDay #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

Effective interventions in fragile contexts are built on synergies and collaboration 🤝🏻 We align with our partner Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in emphasizing the value of partnerships and long-term commitment as key elements to build stability. In South Sudan, we have been working together on addressing local needs, building resilience, and fostering self-reliance for women, men and children affected by multiple, often overlapping crises - from conflict to climate shocks. In this insightful interview Marlehn Thieme, President of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), highlights how GIZ and Welthungerhilfe collaborate to deliver impactful results across the world, while also detailing the challenges of operating in fragile and conflict-prone environments: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/daF7xbYY #SouthSudan #Resilience

We support children, women and men who are affected by the consequences of violent conflicts and wars. To this end, we work with partners such as Welthungerhilfe (WHH). Because effective development cooperation is directly linked to Germany's stability and role in the world, says Marlehn Thieme, President of Welthungerhilfe. 🤝  💡 She explains in an interview with #GIZakzente why this is the case and what the specific forms of cooperation are: https://lnkd.in/daF7xbYY
