Grameen Foundation, as a subcontractor of USAID Entrepreneurship and Investment, supported the design and implementation of the first #sustainable, green and social bond by public offering in Senegal and in West Africa. The anticipated outcome is the issuance of a $35 million bond by Baobab Senegal to secure additional long-term resources. This will enable the creation of an accessible and inclusive financing mechanism for MSMEs, offering favorable terms and conditions tailored to their circumstances and business models. The bond will give priority to investments in MSMEs that (i) are led by women and young entrepreneurs in start-up, growth, and mature stages of development, (ii) are investing in urban and rural areas of all 14 regions in Senegal; and (iii) operating in underserved economic sectors with high socioeconomic impact, notably: agriculture & agri-processing; health and nutrition; renewable energy; water, sanitation, and hygiene. The resources mobilized are expected to result in 5,000 MSMEs accessing capital throughout the 2024-2029 timeframe. Investing in the power of women to end poverty in our lifetime.
About us
Grameen Foundation is a global nonprofit dedicated to ending poverty in our lifetime by investing in the power of women. By enabling new systems of support, we ensure women can access their full potential and build resilience against climate change, financial insecurity, and harmful gender archetypes. Utilizing our expertise and partnerships, we connect poor rural women to essential financial, health and agricultural products and services, while building empowering ecosystems that support her breakthrough. This ecosystem includes strong peer networks, promotes gender equity, and provides information, expertise and market access for poor rural communities. In 2016, Grameen Foundation and the global nonprofit Freedom from Hunger joined forces under the banner of Grameen Foundation. Founded in 1946 under the name of Meals for Millions, throughout its 70 years Freedom from Hunger never hesitated to embrace any change that would further its mission of ending hunger and poverty.

Grameen Foundation leads access to finance activities on the USAID Uthabiti Activity led by Save the Children International. Uthabiti is building inclusive financial and market systems that enable refugees in Uganda to start businesses and build their own self-reliance. This week, we were thrilled to showcase the work of our longtime partner RUFI, to high-level representatives from USAID Bureau for Resilience, Environment and Food Security; USAID Uganda; and Save the Children International. RUFI is a local South Sudanese/Ugandan cross-border microfinance institution that pioneered lending to refugees in Uganda in 2017. In 2023, RUFI and Uthabiti partnered to increase access to financial services to over 80,000 refugees in Palabek Refugee Settlement by opening the first microfinance branch in the settlement. We are also digitally linking refugee VSLAs to formal financial services at RUFI through Grameen's digital savings group platform LedgerLink. Thank you RUFI, USAID, Save the Children and Uthabiti teams for your partnership, we are proud to work with you! Yesterday, we spotlighted the incredible work of Save the Children and #RuralFinanceInitiative (RUFI) microfinance, enabled by #USAIDSavesLives funding in Palabek Refugee Settlement! 🌍 USAID’s Uthabiti activity established the first microfinance institution in Palabek Refugee settlement and has digitally linked Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), thereby enabling refugees and host communities to gain access to essential financial services that are transforming their lives. This collaboration showcases how private sector engagement and digital tools can foster long-term resilience and financial inclusion. Join us in supporting these life-changing initiatives! #RefugeeResilience #FinancialInclusion #Uthabiti #GrameenFoundation Mwesigwa Bikie Isharaza

The Annual General Meeting (#AGM) is a pivotal milestone for Farmer Producer Organizations (#FPOs), ensuring transparency, accountability, and collective decision-making among members. However, newly formed FPOs often struggle with compliance, leading to disqualification, legal repercussions, and loss of credibility, hindering growth and progress for smallholder farmers, particularly women. In this context, Cluster-Based Business Organizations (#CBBOs) play a vital role. We are glad to share that Sindhuali Farmer Producer Company Limited, formed and promoted by Grameen Foundation India (#GFI) as a #CBBO since 2023, and supported by the Uttar Pradesh Diversified Agriculture Support Project (#UPDASP), successfully held its first #AGM on September 10, 2024, in Dhakiya Ranwas village, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Key highlights included: - Distribution of share certificates to all shareholders - Transparent reporting of business activities, income, and expenses - Emphasis on increasing shareholder numbers, doubling farmers' income, and collective efforts - Promotion of natural farming, reduction of chemical fertilizers, and emphasis on coarse grains The meeting underscored the importance of collective efforts to achieve these goals, with directors motivated to work under the 'One Village One Product(#ODOP)' theme. The event concluded with Dr. Ashish Singh (District Project Coordinator, UPDASP), praising GFI's work and extending best wishes for the FPO's bright future. #FPO #FarmerProducerCompany #Sustainability #Agriculture #AGM #RuralDevelopment Bharati Joshi Arindam Dasgupta Shatarupa Kashyap Nitin Srivastava

Listen to our CEO, Bharati Joshi, as she reflects on Grameen’s work in Climate-Smart Agriculture (#CSA) innovations among Farmer Producer Organizations (#FPOs) and smallholder farmers, especially women, at the #FPOConclave2024 organized by Samunnati. In this session, she outlined how Grameen promotes the introduction of technology in crop selection, development of the climate-smart package of practices, facilitates institutional innovation through partnerships, and ensures access to financial products. She also discussed the challenges in adopting climate-smart technology, particularly among women farmers, considering their roles in decision-making and their access to finance and technology. A key challenge she highlighted was effectively communicating to farmers that "cost reduction due to CSA = increased incomes". She emphasized the importance of behavior change communication for promoting CSA technologies as it means breaking the status quo. Additionally, she touched upon the sustainability and scaling requirements and the need for robust supply chains for emerging technologies. This insightful session was moderated by Ekta Jaju, Co-founder & Senior Advisor at SwitchON Foundation (Environment Conservation Society), and featured contributions from other esteemed speakers including Diwakar Ram Boddupalli, MD & CEO of CreditAccess Life Insurance Limited; Puja Arti, Lead of Sales and Marketing at Absolute; and Supriya Gowda K.R, Program Manager at SELCO Foundation. To truly maximize the impact of Business Correspondents in reaching diverse populations, it's essential to tailor their training, tools, and technology to the unique needs of each community they serve. As Arindam Dasgupta (Interim CPO & Director-IDF, GFSI) highlighted today at #GFF2024, integrating localized knowledge with innovative digital solutions is key to bridging the gap between under served populations and financial service providers. Together, we can ensure that inclusivity becomes a tangible reality for all. We thank everyone who joined the conversation on "Does One Size Fit All?:BCs for Digital and Phygital Lending".
