Decarbonizing the built environment will require collaboration across the climatetech ecosystem, with corporate leaders, investors, policymakers, and others working in concert with technology entrepreneurs to scale solutions. That’s why our fall 2024 Sector Pitch Day with IMPEL at Berkeley Lab explored groundbreaking building tech innovations and the partnerships necessary to help them scale. Part of our quarterly Sector Pitch Day series, we brought together 10 building tech startups—Climative, Counterbalance Software, Eco-Shelter, Enersion Inc., Monaire, Reframe Systems, Revert Technologies, Simplus Systems, Stepwise, and Uplift—to pitch onstage, plus reverse pitches from Saint-Gobain, Holcim, Zacua Ventures, and Building Ventures. Our community of startups is at the heart of our mission and the work we do every day—and we're so excited to share that we've welcomed more than 70 new startup members to our two incubators so far this year! 41 of these members are based at Greentown Boston, and 30 are based at Greentown Houston. Our labs and offices are buzzing with new energy, new faces, and brand-new technologies that are on their way to decarbonizing the key greenhouse-gas-emitting sectors—agriculture, buildings, electricity, manufacturing, and transportation—and building resilient, adaptive communities. “The depth and breadth of technologies our members are developing speaks to the strength of our ecosystems and the dynamism of the climatetech industry,” said our COO Joubin Hatamzadeh. “We love seeing our 71 new members prototyping in our labs, connecting with our partners, supporting one another through our community events, and taking advantage of all that Greentown membership has to offer. We can’t wait to see all that they’ll accomplish while at Greentown and beyond!” Read our full announcement: https://lnkd.in/eAw6PCsg #climatetech #innovation #startups #decarbonization #earlystage #incubator

It's a big day for the energy storage world! Form Energy has raised a $405M Series F to accelerate the commercialization of its iron-air long-duration energy storage systems. Joining in the investment round is our Terawatt partner GE Vernova, which also signed an MOU regarding areas of strategic collaboration to support Form as it continues to ramp up commercial deployments. This brings Form's total funds raised to date to over $1.2B. We're especially proud of Form's approach to siting its manufacturing—and accompanying job creation and economic development—in communities historically bolstered by the coal economy. "After seven years of dedicated R&D, product engineering, testing, and validation, and most recently trial production, our 100-hour iron-air battery system is ready for serial production and commercial deployment. We are excited to continue proving that American manufacturing for innovative energy technology is alive and well, right here in the industrial heartland of West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley. This Series F funding will foster American innovation by accelerating the expansion of our multi-day battery manufacturing, creating new jobs, and upskilling a manufacturing workforce, as well as advancing the development of a more efficient and scalable process for low-cost green iron production," said CEO and co-founder Mateo Jaramillo. https://lnkd.in/gs4uRFCq #energystorage #batteries #longduration #ironair #economicdevelopment #americanmanufacturing #unicorn #manufacturing

The seven ACCEL Year 2 startups are working on everything from yeast-centered water treatment, to vertical-axis offshore wind turbines, to algae- and cellulose-based fashion beads. And in the first half of the program, they’ve been hard at work on tech and business development. Check out some highlights of progress the startups have made through their training with VentureWell and membership at Greentown: 💧 AtmoSpark Technologies Inc. conducted a pilot under a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense and has secured another paid pilot that involves scaling its tech 10x over the upcoming year. 🚰 Aquasaic has a water-treatment pilot lined up with the city of Antioch, CA. 🌬️ Axis Sky Renewables has begun fundraising and developed plans to build out its team and create a proof-of-concept. 🌎 Carbon Negative Solutions Inc was selected for three different accelerator programs, won multiple awards and pitch competitions, and was featured in a concrete-industry podcast and a TEDx Talk. 📿 Cellsense has been hard at work in Greentown Boston's wet lab and won a What Design Can Do Redesign Everything Challenge and won a $25k prize from the JFK Foundation. 🏗️ EcoForge has been leveraging prototyping and wet lab space at Greentown and meeting with corporates including our partner BASF. 🍃 Sankofa Dynamics is securing its IP, building its team, identifying pilot partners, and finding local sources of post-consumer-waste feed materials. Most battery innovations focus on the electrode materials—like silicon anodes, cobalt-free cathodes, or manganese-rich cathodes. But Elementium Materials, Inc. is taking a different approach: introducing a novel electrolyte that builds higher-energy-density, faster-charging, lower-cost, and longer-lasting batteries. “The key to unlocking next-generation batteries is in the electrolyte,” says CEO Matt Dawson. “Our technology creates an incredibly stable battery that translates into very long calendar life, very long cycle life, higher voltage, and higher energy density. This could reshape the energy transition as we know it.” Elementium Materials is not only improving the performance of batteries, but lowering their cost: by stretching batteries’ expensive electrode materials further, the innovation allows batteries to do more with less material. Its electrolytes are nonflammable and the electrolyte materials are recyclable.
